Hello, I am trying to make sure that when I buy my fish from the lfs that they are all tank or farm bred. However I am finding this very difficult lol. So I have come here to ask if anyone has any knowledge on how the majority of these fish are caught? So these are the fish I am looking at:

harlequin rasbora's (looking on google it would seem most of these are farm bred)
bristle-nose plecs (I assume long fin/ albino are all tank bred dont know about normal?)
Kuhli Loaches (really don't know lol but I have read a few websites saying they are both wild caught and farm bred)
Amano shrimps (not sure on these either)

Thanks for the help :D

Can't help with everything, but I know that pretty much all bristlenoses will be tank-bred, as they are very, very easy to breed, and therefore it would not make financial sense to go through all the trouble to catch them from the wild. If there are any wild-caught ones around, they will definatly be advertised as such, and will be at a higher price, as they will be attractive to breeders.

I think Amano shrimp are easy to breed too, so suspect the same of them.

Don't know about Kuhlis or harlequin raspboras.

Amano Shrimp are actually quite hard to breed, as the young need brackish water to get past the larval stage.

I believe that most fish are bred on farms, they are easier to get hold of and cheaper to buy all from the same place, as stated fish that are wild caught would be sold at a higher price because of breeders wanting them!

all teh fish above can be bred in tanks anyways

where in the world are you from and what lfs' are you thinking? It might be easier to ask in store :)

I'm pretty sure the majority of Amano shrimp are wild caught. IMO it would be better to go with cherry shrimp, these are tank bred and will easily reproduce on their own, unlike amanos.

I agree. It's hard to find wild caught fish. Like she said most all your basic aquarium fish are going to be tank/farmed raised. So I would not worry about it. Out of all my fish and I have 15 differant kinds only one is wild caught.

Many people want wild caught fish over tank raised because the wild fish are not inbred so they make for better breeders.

thanks for all the replies, much relieved now lol. I thought it was going to be a lot more difficult to find non wild caught fish lol.
