Endlers Livebearer or Poecilia wingei are a small livebearer that is closely related to the Guppy or Poecilia reticulata that was discovered in 1975 by Prof. John A. Endler in Laguna de Patos, Cumana, in northeastern Venezuela.

It's taken science 30 years of arguing to finally decide last year (2006) that True endlers are genetically a different species and not a subgenus of Poecilia reticulata.

Their are 3 classes to endlers.

Class 'N' = Originated from their native waters in the Cumana area of Venezuela.
Class 'P' = Fish of unknown origin but showing all typical Endler characteristics.
Class 'K' = Any fish resulting from a cross breed (guppy/molly etc etc).

This photo is of a Class 'N' Endler and is one of the rare lines in the UK. The main problem is shop's selling endlers of Class 'P' but truly their Class 'K' and this then results in many people selling so called true endlers when sadly their a guppy cross breed. Then these fish are introduce to true Class 'P' and corrupting the line.

If you want to keep endlers then personally i would suggest looking for a breeder, and that the person dose know a little about his fish.
Simple signs to look for when buying Class 'N' Endlers:-
  • Females Endlers should not be the size of female guppies. 40-45mm max.
  • Females have no colour to the body or fins.
  • Male Endler's do not have long Dorsal fins.
  • Endlers to not show swords in the tail.
  • Uniform colouration (crosses can show vast differences in the same gene pool).
This is a working project and hope to add more soon if you have any photo's then please send them to me to build a database of them.

Nice Endler, I wouldnt mind some like that myself.

Quick question bout these fishies, do the females show pregnancy the way guppy females do? Of the 6 that I have only one looks remotely pregnant so I was wondering if maybe they just stay thinner due to their small size?

hi endlers, the females show pregnancy the same as guppies the females grow as big as guppie females, endlers are actually a guppie :good:

Their exactly the same breeding wise as guppies, this is why they cross breed so easily.

As for saying endlers are guppies, this is not true.
It's taken science 30 years of arguing to finally decide last year that True endlers are genetically a different species and not a subgenus. Although they easily cross with guppies would suggest their a subgenus. However we have to take that science and DNA is enough to say their different and I'm please that the arguments that used to occour over this has now been settled.

ok i stand corrected

LOL not to sound pushy but I've been having argument for 15 years as i though they was gonna be a subgenus ;)

Hmm perhaps then they had just given birth in the tank before I bought them, there were lots of fry swimming around. Im just hoping I didnt end up with a bunch of barren ones somehow.

i didnt mean i dowt it they hadnt given birth before you bought them that could be the case

They came from a tank of mixed males and females which was the reason for my concern that they werent at least a little plump. Im feeding them a little more frequently though to see if maybe they just need some tlc.

Well, left the fish room for 30 min today and came back to 8 or 9 new Endler fry I wasnt expecting. These females must be very young because none of them looked ready to pop. They look like small guppy fry no surprise, can't wait to see how fast the buggers will grow.

;) good news then, they grow same sort of speed as guppies.

young females or 1st drops dont always show as much as subsequent drops, ive had young females drop that didnt even look gravid.

Yah, we've had 2 or 3 females drop now and now some of them appear to be getting more plump. We've had 0 fry mortalities but we'll see how things go when they leave their home tank for the 10 gallon. I always seem to lose one or two fry that way. Should hopefully have a good colony going soon as these little sprites are growing super fast.
