Heya I found this forum with a little google help and was wondering if you could help me with my tank's cleaning problem. My tank is setup with some sand and an internal pump as I've sworen by them since my younger days keeping tropical fish but the water seems go a cloudy redish colour after a few days and was wondering how othen you should clean the tank out as I was always told to take the water back 50% every 6 months and do a full tank clean every year which also worked very well in my old tropical set up.

I feed my fish twice a day normally flakes but a little fresh veg now and again and shrimp as treats.

I currently have 1 coment and 2 baby yellow goldfish with 2 loaches (unsure of the type).

Any advice would greatly help me and the little guys enjoy years of entertianment

Thanks

Im not sure if it could be the sand i have always used gravel i would recomend a 20%ish water change every week or so

Either 10% or 20% water change weekly and never do a full tank clean as you will destroy all the good bacteria.
I too only use gravel as I find this the easiest to clean and my fish love it, is your filter powerful enough as if not your water will suffer and mores to the point so will your fish.

i good filter is essential and a 50% water change can also get rid of lots of good bacteria

The filter is made by fluval and pumps 200 liters an hour don't know if that helps and I'll try a 15% water change tomorrow as it will be easy for me to keep as a sunday routine.

Fluval is a really good make and the size you have is powerful enough for a 105 gallon tank.
How big is your tank?

it's a 14 x 10 x 7 (LxHxW) and my volume math skills were never very good :p

I'm not 100% but it can't be anything over 70gallons can it?

Sounds more like 5 gallons if thats in inches.
which if it is will be too small for any of the fish you have.

I wouldn't have thought so, if so you have adequate filter power with the one you have and like I said Fluval are excellent.
Don't know how it works with sand cause I have the gravel but I know you need to rinse the stuff loads of times before putting it in the tank because it leaves a residue which can turn the water cloudy and makes the fish poorly.

5 gallons? well I did say it can't be more then 70. Hmm well they are all small now so wouldn't it be ok as a starter tank until they reach a larger size then I can move them up to a bigger tank? or is this the reason why my tank is getting cloudy quickly?

ah I only rinised the sand the once that may also be the problem.

The tank is getting dirty quickly because you arent doing enough water changes. On a tank that size with so many fish you just wont be able to keep the water clean for long, even if you did 100% water changes each day.
Normal single tailed goldfish need around 15 gallons each and fancy tailed can get away with 10 gallons for a few years and need 10 times filtration for the amount of water they are in.
I guess you will be chasing your tail for a while then until you get a bigger home.

So I'm looking at investing in a 50 gallon tank then?

My tank is a 60 gallon tank and my filter is powerful enough for a 200 gallon tank(big is always better!!!!!!!!)
I have six babise in my tank so I am ok for now but will need to go bigger when they grow.
You are always better with a bigger tank, powerful filter and adequate water changes.
