Hi everyone. i need some advice i have a pond outside in my heated greenhouse and was wondering if there was any large colorful fish i could put in that are not gold fish.

preferably tropical fish that can take some cold.
any ideas?

thanks!

also it would be nice if the fish didnt have a taste for waterlilies.

Weatherloaches do well in cool to low tropical temps, so a few of those would work. They are often kept in ponds in Japan. The golden variety are particulaly attractive and will be easier to see in the water. They're also very friendly social fish and will soon become tame and feed from your hand.

How many gallons is your pond? This will determine the size and number of the fish you could keep in it.

take temp readings of the pond at different times of the day...whats the air temp?

also size of pond, depth and whats in it now, including sizes....filtration? if so what is it?

when did you last do water change, maintenance

ok, my pond is 14-15 feet wide and i dont have a measurement of how deep but it isnt shallow.
there are goldfish in it now, we are planning on getting rid of them. we have a waterfall going into the pond too to add air, also not sure about filtration 100%. but i will find out

The pond is 2500 gallons with a large filter and is well maintained. The water circulation is 6000 gallons per hour due to the waterfall  and the temp never drops below 65 degrees but does range as high as 85 in the summer. the entire pond is in a private botanical garden. I've attached a couple of links to photos of the atrium and pond.

I think perhaps a pair of Koi should do ok in there. I'm really fond of Ghost Koi personally but that's just me.

That's a beautiful garden by the way.

ghost koi are known to kill goldfish if theres any there and really only a couple would be confortable as they grow to 3 foot.

but really anything smaller than koi would be easily missed if you wanted to see anything...could get orfe, those are yellow.

sub tropical fish could include paradisefish, which can be kept in larger ponds.

i have had a paradise fish before it ripped the eyes out of all my other fish.

how big do they get?

not that i know of..i know people that have nice lillies and keep lots of koi...maybe depends on diet..if you provide elodea then maybe not...need input from those that have kept both.

sturgeon but the black so you can get an albino one

You could keep a couple of marbled or albino clarias catfish in there although they are quite predatory towards smaller fish so any tankmates would need to be a good size.

Also just a thought but how steep are the edges? If the building is fully secure you could add a couple of yellow bellied turtles or similar,
I'm doubtful that they would travel too far from the pond so could be an option

Edit: Actually what part of the world are you from?
