Okay okay. I got some triops eggs which dont come with any weird little creatures (insifua/detrius or somthing like that) and ive been trying to get them to work but the triops dont hatch or if they do hatch they dont last long what am i doing wrong? Ive tied using detrius that this website told me to use but it doesnt work? can some body help me?

which would be better for triops an 11 litre tank or a 20 litre? Would i need any ort of filtering if so will a bio-filter do?

Have a look at this site they should have all the information you need. As for them dying young I cant help you, I'm having the same problem with my fairy shrimp at the moment :( .

You need to provide something for the triops to eat when they are nauplis, and infusoria from detritus is by far the easiest method to use. Look under 'articles' then 'eggs and detritus' through the link WhichDoctor provided :good: . Remember to use only a small volume of water when hatching the triops, so the infusoria concentration will be greater and the triops will be able to find enough food.

I cant give much other advice without details like the type of water are you using for hatching the triops, which species are you referring to, what temperature are you hatching at and if your providing light for hatching...but I'm leaving for a short break away from the internet tomorrow so if you provide details I personally wont be able to answer for about a week, however maybe someone else will be able to :).

Certainly the 20 litre. Filtration is always a good idea, and IME greatly increases the lifespan (and consequentially, size) of the triops. Ammonia kills triops... Simple air driven sponge filters are the best, as they pose no danger to the minuscule baby triops and oxygenate the water to an extent too.

What are you feeding them? What type of set up are you hatching them in?

Fairy shrimp do much much better in 'green' water, since they eat the free floating algae that creates these conditions.

When I hatch fairy shrimp, I use some 'clean' (no pesticides or other chemicals) dirt from my garden at the bottom of the tank and just quarter fill it with RO water (or any water with very low dissolved solids, to simulate rain water).
I keep them under a lamp 24 hours for 3 days to stimulate algal growth, and after the three days I start slowly filling the tank up with dechlorinated tap or bottled water and I add aquatic plant fertiliser to the tank so more algae can grow. After this point I only keep the lamp on for 12 hours a day. You can also place the tank on a bright windowsill so long as it doesn't get too cold.

You can add some sort of aquatic snail to keep the algae off the glass.

Alternatively, after day 3 you can start just feeding powdered spirulina or liquid 'brine shrimp food'. But getting the amount of food right is very important, since ammonia spikes happen very easily in unfiltered fairy shrimp tanks when too much food is fed :good:.

I have been using the same method as the My Triop site suggested for hatching triops. Using a small jar with detritus to start them off and then having a small tank to transfer them into after they get big enough. The information that came with the eggs said to feed them with bakers yeast.

Nice idea of having some soil in the bottom to start it off, I'll try that next time. Actually my latest batch have survived using the same method as I was using before. Having some soil in the bigger tank has really helped it get established quickly though.

Thanks for the advice :good: .
