I noticed last nigt after putting the last of the Cloudy Eye treatment in the tank that the tank has some sort of translucent "growth" in it. It is a whitish-clear color and looks whispy like cotton, and it is stuck on the intake to our filter, the driftwood, and the gravel. It looks like a "growth" or mold or something, but I didn't notice it until after we started the Cloudy Eye treatment. We're using Maracyn-Two. I'm pretty sure it is, but could the cloudy "growths" just be medication that has settled in the tank?

Anyway, yesterday was our last treatment of the Maracyn-Two. Even before we found the cloudy cotton-growths we inteded to replace the carbon and other parts of our filter as well as do a 25% water change. Now that we've found the "growths" we'll probably be going through the tank with a new toothbrush (one that's never been used) and scrubbing the things that have the white junk on them. Any other ideas for cleaning out the tank and getting rid of some of the white residue?

How old is your driftwood? Mine let off a similar white cotton for a while, that i didnt notice at first - but my latest pests (snails) are cleaning it up nicely

The driftwood isn't even a year old yet....its maybe only 4-5 months old.

I looked at some pictures of slime moulds. Its really hard for me to say wether that's what it is or not. All the pictures I looked at at the cotton-like wisps of stuff I was describing, but it also had vein-like stuff trailing from the cottony whisps.....we don't have any vein-like stuff in our tank, just the cottony whisps.

sounds like a fungus

i get the same on my mopani wood that i have and have now remoed said piece of wood from my tank

Yeah i would definately say it was the wood - no need to remove it (allthough i was mis-informed that it was rotten, so was going to remove it - until my local breeder told me this was normal), if youve not got any fish that will eat it, simply scrub it off every week when you do the water change, it should stop in a month or 2 - my mopani roots just about stopped releasing it

cheers for that tip mate, ive had this piece of wood for approx 2 months now and the amount of fungus it gets in a week is crazy

Went to clean out the tank and found the white mouldy stuff sparingly on the driftwood, covering our plants, and absolutely blanketing our gravel. Based on how it looks, smells, ect., I would think it would be some sort of mold, even though it doesn't really look like that slime mould. Once you get the stuff out of the water though it completely disappears, put it back in the water and and the transcluent-mouldy puffs come back.

We ended up taking some our tank water and "catching" some samples of the mouldy stuff from our tank and putting in the water in a clear container. Our local fish store is closed, so we intend to take it in tomorrow so maybe they can tell us what type of thing we might be dealing with.....and how to get rid of it.

I've had something like that (cobweb like) in my 10 gal molly tank for a few weeks. I believe (from reading) that it's a kind of white algae--and picked up an anti-algae treatment, which I've applied twice already. I'm going to do a water change today or tomorrow and I'll let you know if it helps. It does seem to have reduced a bit --not as much fuzz and blacker residue now. I'll let you know.
