I currently have 6 tiger barbs in a 5 gallon tank. I also have a 10 gallon tank, which I tried to make a cichlid tank out of, before I did adequate research. I now know there is no way I can keep the yellow lab, convict and a red zebra in the 10. I know most of you all are going to say buy a larger tank, but I do not have the funds and parents won't allow me. (They think the easier the better. They do not understand the concept of a bigger tank is easier to take care of.) So I was wanting to get your guys opinion? Should I just leave everybody alone and see who makes it? Or should I add the tiger barbs into the 10 gallon with cichlids. My cichlids are small, around 2 inches or so. I also have 6 small tiger barbs.. And there is no way my parents will allow me to get rid of the cichlids since they payed a good amount of money for all them. Also, with my water parameters being sky high, isnt helping any. I have been doing 35% water changes every 2 nights, and it isn't helping at all. I really screwed myself over by jumping into this hobby without doing proper research!

well wow can you rehome the tigers? youll need to rehome the at least the convict for it can be in the same PH as the african and vise versa will die.

Not really. The tigers are stuck with me

If the results are high, you need to be doing much bigger water changes. 50% daily at least, make sure you remember to dechlorinate the water and temperature match.

It will be best if you can rehome all the fish and then start fresh. Doing a fishless cycle before adding fish and making sure to research heaps.
I understand about your parents, but try telling them its the best for the fish. Either rehome or upgrade. :/

Tiger barbs can have different water requirements to Cichlids, so it depends what species of Cichlid you have if it’s even possible for the two to go together.
Tiger Barbs require
pH 6.8-7.5
22-26 Celsius or 72-79 Fahrenheit

Most Cichlids are okay with those parameters but some require different water conditions

I hope your parents understand the constant water changes will take a toll on the water bill.  If they cared for what they paid on any of the fish they should allow you to get a 25-30gallon tank to rehome them.  You can always use craigslist, amazon, ebay, etc. to save money on the tank or filter.  However, I would just try to see if I could sell the fish back for what you paid; should be fairly easily to do so.

I wouldnt say that a larger tank is easier to take care of though.  More water to replace/change, more chemicals if disease, more area to cover (plants/gravel), its a lot more money the larger you go and more work on cleaning.
