Transferring Fish

an emergengy of sorts, we need to transfer whats in one tank to the other this evening if possible but what can we tarnsfer them in? do we need to float them? if so in what? would a carrier bag suffice?

I'll first make sure the temperature in each is the same. Then half fill a bucket with water from 1 tank and fill it up with water from the other. Then just net the fish put them in the bucket. Then you can put them in the new tank. Is the new tank cycled?

I would also transfer a fair portion of the water from the old tank to the new one. Then it's not much of a change to them.

everything matches on the test. both tropical tanks want to put one lot into the other bigger tank. need the smaller tank for the goldfish who have suddenly got a serious problem due to their size and we dont want them to die. we have the room in the large 180ltr tank for the fellas in the smaller tropical tank. everything between the 2 tanks is the same. the new tank to the fellas from the smaller tank is cycled.

i fully expect some casualties if we do this. and it seems to be our only option right now.

Shouldn't be bad if the water in both are the same. Just try to keep the stress levels down. So just like when you first bought them don't feed them for 1st day and leave the light off and don't bother them for awhile after your have transferred them.

we had an emergency last night. overnight sunday/monday morning the tank for the goldfish in the kitchen went proper cloudy. mr ant did a water change of whatever percent youre meant to do and treated it etc, still no change and by the evening its not looking good. test of water quality showed bad levels nor nitrite [or nitrate, i can never get them round the right way]

quick decision was to transfer my tropicals [which admittedly was a little overstocked for the tank size] into his tropical huge tank thats only got a few fish.

fun and games ensued trying to catch them and get them in the bucket. had an escapee who flipped along the carpet before mr ant caught it and not the dog between his greedy jaws.

fully expecting casualties in the now singular tropical tank. fergal the red tailed shark went almost white during the process through stress. my yoyos went pale [though it seems they do this from time to time anyway].

i was so stressed i was sick [actually , i was pissed which made me sick] and went off to bed expecting a ####load of dead fish in the morning and didnt think the coldwater goldfish would be moved last night.

mr ant bless him stayed up until 3am and transferred the goldfish when the tank was just right for them.

and everyone is hunkydory!! neil, diamond, brucie and scampi are loving their new home and the tropicals are having a whale of a time in their new home.

im still curious about yoyo breeding. nothing on the web about this but they must be bred somewhere for resale. i am certain we have a male and a female and tonight they did the right proper dirty dance of the yoyo and the male was shooting stuff out of his nether regions. the female [if im right in sexing them from what i have read] then went under the rock she now calls home. when she emerged fergal shot in and started munching and was chased by a very angry tickles.
