just got a new tank set up.. waited appropriate time for aquarium to balance its environment... 2 days ago, purchaced 2 honey red gouramis, and 1 tourquois gourami. Today I awoke to find my Tourquois lying on its side on the bottom of the tank huffing and puffing. I think it maybe a possible ammonia issue... i immediately changed 10 % of the water in tank, and added Aquaplus.. is there anything i could possibly do to save this fish? He s my pride and joy.

appreciate any info/help.. thanks kindly

If you are using them to cycle the tank you haven't picked hardy fish at all, as they are very sensitive to water quality, what are your stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and oh, is it possible to take them back to the lfs.

good advice. those gouramis are hard to keep in good conditions let alone a tank thats cycling. return whats still alive and get some platy or barbs. oh and i wouldnt bother with that ammolock its just a money spinner. you dont need it

I agree with the above. Tossing Gouramis in your tank during cycling equals loss of fish. Posting your parameters here will help everyone to help YOU in the future. SH

i would cycle with some live plants, corys, and maybe some amano shrimp, great combo, it got my system set up perfectly and i've had no problems, except maybe a little hair algae.

Corys are even worse to cycle a tank with as they are very sensitive fish, cycling fish even though they are hardy dosn't mean they will survive the cycle,, black widow tetra's, danio, and platys though i don't tend to find them hardy anymore.

What are you talking about? Corys are actually very hardy fish, in no way sensitive. There is even an entire article in Aquarium USA magazine describing the whole tank starting and cycling process, and it clearly states that nitrification can be started with hardy fish, including guppies, mosquitofish, algae-eaters, and corys. One can also use additives like bio-spira, which adds the nitrifying bacteria straight in. Snails can be a nuisance, but they also are able to help with the nitrifying process as well.

Magazines are not alway right.

Yeah but I think most people believe a popularly distributed magazine written by a longtime fish expert over some random person on the internet.

Not arguing not worth it, cycling a tank using fish takes it toll on the hardiest of fish, as they live in a toilet.

Thanks for the replys and opinions, will take them into consideration... Moved my Honey red gouramis to an established tank immediately, sadly to say, the tourquois didn t not make it (...

I'm actual a novice ( 2 months exp )... I should have read more on gouramis before purchasing.. was a learning experience.. to bad it was at the cost of my tourquois.. such a pretty fish...

thanks again for the information parted by you folks..

RIP fish. I am sorry about your loss. Most of us in the beginning made alot of the same mistakes. Good luck on your tank.

Sorry R.I.P.
