Like Bettabelieve it said, we saw the shipping packages. Honestly, it's not awful for shipping... there's just enough water to cover them so they're not thrashing around and being thrown against the wall of the bag and stuff. But to KEEP THEM IN THEM?!?! FOR A WEEK?! Do they not know that bettas breathe air? These bags are probably no more than 1.5-2" square.... half filled with water...

Go ahead and call the local authorities at that. Animal cruelty!! Seriuosly. People always say, "Oh, they live in puddles." Psh... is the puddle less than .5oz of water? I think not. Ridiculous.

Sounds like your pet people don't know sheeeeeet about bettas at all. That just repulses me... ugh. I'm seriuosly getting sick to my stomach at the thought of keeping them in those SHIPPING bags. That's what they're for: SHIPPING. Can you imagine what the fin rot has to be like? Freaking morons...

Oh man, I am just FUMING right now... if you couldn't tell.

SO yes, CALL! And post the number so we can call too... and call the police about animal cruelty. And take a camera in and take some pictures of the awful conditions BEFORE you call the police. Don't be afraid. Be angry and decisive.

Well I would have loved to bring them all home, but there were at least 10 and I really don't have the money for all those tanks!!! :(

The store is here in Canada. When I spoke to the manager I was told that they breathe air cuz their puddles dry up in their natural habitat so they were used to not being in water ... and laughingly told me they had no idea how long they had been in their bags  I had no idea how to respond to that - they were totally clueless :(

The store info is here:

THAT MAKES ME IRATE.
I saw some fish come in at AniMart one day like that... about 25 or 30 of them were crammed into a bread bag.. YES... a bread bag. It's a horrendous sight to see for the first time, ESPECIALLY if you had no idea they were shipped that way. I"ve come to accept the fact that it's in their best interest to be shipped that way - whatever. But to leave them in there for any length of time - that warrants a BIG OL butt chewing. :grr:

Anyway - I had seen them laying on the counter so I (VERY politely, of course) went over and told the guys working there to get them into their containers ASAP. They did. I think they were scared. -_-

ANYWAY... Those fish should be floated and put into something else IMMEDIATELY.

These guys will be getting a favor from me if they get more than 5 minutes of niceness from me when I call there. But I'll give them a few seconds until I find out why this is happening.

Off to call - I don't even care if it IS an international call. UUGH.

GAAH!
I can't call internationally from here!!!
And I can't find a website for them.

Aaah - I'll call the SPCA and the Humane Society and sick them on those freaks.

Well from what I have been reading there are no animal protection laws here in Quebec - I went onto the SPCA website to see if I could lodge a complaint, but this is the info I found:

The S.P.C.A. in Montreal employs 3 investigators. The Province of Quebec has only 8 investigators, compared with Ontario which has 347 investigators. Unfortunately, since we lack efficient laws in Quebec, investigators don't have the necessary power to accuse and sentence offenders.

Since Quebec is the only territory in North America where there are no laws in effect to ensure animal welfare and safety, it is therefore impossible for our investigators to enforce norms and standards which do not exist.

As far as I can tell Safari does not have a website

I sicked the SPCA in Ontario on some kids fighting bettas for fun.
They check into every case, even fish. :)

Here's a quote from the woman who I contacted regarding that case...
Yes we certainly do class this as cruelty, we protect ALL animals, including fish. If you would like to give me more details I would be more than happy to get an investigator to look into it, thanks, Wendy

I'm emailing her again now. I'll let you know what I hear back from her...

I love to be evil when whoever is receiving the evilness DESERVES IT! :shifty:

Oh wait - you're in Quebec, aren't you.
Hmm...
Well, I'm going to contact her anyway and see if there's a way she can help me figure out who to contact.
I'll keep ya posted either way.

Okay, she's been emailed.
I'll keep ya posted.

Last time I contacted them it took a day or 2 for them to respond so we'll see.
