Went to the movies yesterday (to get into the air conditioning :) ) and stopped at the LPS which is in the same mall.

Well they have bettas there, some in the itty-bitty fish bowls that seem to be standard around here, but some were in bags.... OMG these bags are apparently how they are shipped from the breeders. They are about the size of a jewellery bag, probably hold about 1/4 cup of water and are sealed shut.... no way to feed them or clean the water  talk about suffocating your fish.

They had about 20 of them on a shelf and 3 or 4 that had fallen off the shelf and were laying on their sides in about 1/2 inch of water ... totally disgusting!!!!!!!!

When I spoke to the "fish guy" he laughed me off and said that is how they like to be... I was so disgusted.

I know there have been a lot of posts on this topic, and I have seen alot of bettas in those little cups & bowls, but this was just beyond belief ... even my husband was disgusted (and he thinks I've gone loopy over bettas) :X :X

Ugh, I know how you feel! There's a shop here and they keep their bettas in tiny bags too!

I asked the keeper when they got the fish in, thinking they had JUST gotten them in, and he said for a week. They've been in those tiny bags for a week!

I was so disgusted, I told him its best to put them in bowls. know what he said? he said "We have no room to bowl them. they're fine in the bags"

Ugh, my mother had to drag me out of that store.

believe me, there are LOTS of horrid stories about these fish.. and the owners simply dont care

LPS = Local Pet Store --> as opposed to a LFS (local fish store) which specializes only in fish & aquarium stuff (good english eh?) :)

Well actually it is a chain (although I'm not sure how many stores they have). It is called Safari. The one closest to my house actually is very good and take really good care of their fish - very informative as well (although not always right) and they usually put their bettas in the plant tanks so they have room to swim (1 per tank of course :)). This particular Safari store is in Angrignon mall (about 20 minutes away from me). It is the 1st time I check out their fish and I was totally and utterly disgusted with the betta setups :(

Call the manager. I have learned a lot hanging around these forums (and bettamomma) you NEED to call the manager to get anywhere. Don't scream, be rational. Remember, they aren't that bright. Speak slowly and use small words. Pound them with facts about REAL rice paddies, etc. Also, if you could post the # for us that'd be awesome.

what i would do (actually i would if i had the money and the time) i would go to that store and rescue all of the live bettas. They deserve a nice happier life.

^^^ only bad part about doing that is (and I like to call this the walmart factor :p ) that they will just get more in, and keep them the same ol' ignorant way. it's sick, and cruel. ugh.

i was once in walmart and stole a female betta by dumping her water in my popeyes cup :p hehe they never saw it coming :shifty: so now i have a wonderful FREE double tail gurly! :p

personally dont steal bettas people ... it was a tough one trying to get her out of the store with out the censors frying her :p but needless to say i agree with bettabelieveit! :p buying them just makes them want to get more in  but see if you rant before you buy :D Well you know! :p

yes, stealing bettas isn't the best option, all the time, i mean, what if there's left over soda in the popeyes cup, or ice? the betta can sustain horrible damage

Really tho, call and kill them with facts like stated earlier, they will get sick of you. and please, please please.. feel free to post the phone number of this store, they will shortly become overwhelmed (did I spell that right? haha) and perhaps do something about it! :)

That's how they are shipped, I saw some at a LFS the other week, they come in TINY little bags, sealed, ment for shipping only, and these dimwits are keeping them in the tiny bags for them to suffer and die, it sounds. the tiny bags are horrible, but for shipping purposes, I can understand, but not for keeping them in. This angers me.

Uhhh... it won't take long at all for them to suffocate in those bags. If that LPS is planning on keeping them that way they're going to have a nasty surprise one morning when they're met with a whole shelf full of dead bettas :X
