hi i posted a thread about a wort on my torts neck under its chin WELL>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
i have rang up my local vet's the put me on to the nurse lol and she filled me in on some info, she asked if it looked like a skin tag and i was shocked and felt a prat for calling it a wort as it is more of a skin tag,
she said its likley to be a skin tag as the positioning of it is were he is going in and out of his shell i feel a little better kinda knowing what it is she said bathe him every day as he will be sheding skin but horsfields are slower for wot ever reason?

i am going to a place called northeast exotics in middlesbrough 2 nite when my partners home from work the fella said he would take a look at squirt if i take him along,

i also asked about bedding and he said they use bark chipps when selling tortoise and set ups he said they are priced at £3 for 5 litre or 10 litre for £5

can i use the bark as i want to get him off swadust?

could i use wood chip? another person said use this

Please, please, please dont use woodchip or bark of any kind with your tortoise.

They are clumsy in their eating habits, they're more than happy to walk food all over the viv and then pick it back up with a mouthful of substrate.

Even one wood chipping could seriously injure your tortoise internally and if you werent aware that it had happened, he could die. Either way you'd be looking at completely avoidable upset and a big vets bill.

I'd still recommend you have him properly checked out as a skin tag on a young tortoise seems unlikely to me.
I work with dozens of tortoises some even as old as around 100 and I've never seen one with a skin tag.

If those are your choices a mixture of Hemp bedding and meadow hay as bedding and food will do fine :)

Also, The best place for reptile stuff in your area is Billingham Aquatics their number is - 01642 360058 :good:

The recommended bedding for Russian tortoises is bed-a-beast (compressed coconut bark) and play sand with one end of the enclosure with a pile of good hay like Bermuda grass hay, anything except alfalfa which is not good for them

The bump under the chin should be looked at by a reptile vet only. He could have an infection, abscess or who knows what!

What's a skin tag? A microchip? Those are put into the legs, not the head area.

A skin tag is something humans and dogs get fairly often, I suspect the lady who suggested it was not familiar with exotics.

It's good to see you're getting sound advice on Reptileforums.co.uk aswell :good:

oh okay a little like drop of skin hanging from him. I wouldn't worry about it. either way a vet checks always nice so you know he's doing well. bring in a poo sample to check for internal parasites and he can be debugged. Just about all RT's are WC and full of things

hi it was a skintag he is also under weight not been cared for properly by other ownerd and his shell was 2 soft so i need to fatten him up and use nutrabol more on a daily basis for a month then take him back

how can i fatten him up:S

Not literally fatten him cos you don't want him tight in the shell. Just keep feeding him his vegetation with supplements, outside "walks" and a fruit treat.

A fruit treat???

Horsfields are completely unsuited to the level of readily available sugars in any fruit and it will do him no good at all to have even a little in his diet.
Otherwise, absolutely right, he just needs good consistent growth from a healthy diet in moderate amounts :good:
