I'm looking for a fish to keep with my blue cray and am wondering if anyone knows of any small (1-3") species that are primarily top dwellers...and don't sleep on the bottom of the tank (the cray got my high-fin swordtail who decided the bottom was a good place to sleep...). I want an orange colored fish that can move quickly enough to avoid the cray. I'd appreciate any ideas.

Im sorry but I cant really advise you on that. All I know from keeping crays is that no matter whether they are top, middle or bottom dwellers, there is always a chance that they will get caught by your cray.

All my fish deaths, except one, have been caused by my cray.

The bottom line is.. if you have fish that you are attached to.. then dont do it!
If you are not bothered... then carry on... :D

Depending if the tank is heated or not, try a African Butterfly fish. I have observed mine closly and it has never gone to the bottom of the tank, also it was a VERY fast fish. If you have some floating plants it should be fine.

Hi There,

I have two crays in a 55 gal tank. I also have an odd mixture of fish in there...few guppies, zebras, algae eater varities, etc. The cray fish have never touched a one of them. My latest addition was a couple of electric yellow cichlids; everyone just leaves everyone else alone.

Crays get lucky from time to time, if you love your fish and you love your cray, then keep them separate. :D

Konabound....I would not keep cichlids with your crays....the won't hesitate to eat the crays if they catch them moulting or shortly after they've moulted...
