I have a 2ft tank, which is a little higher than normal size tanks, and the majority of the fish which I have (barbs, tetras) seem to only occupy the bottom half of the tank.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice of types of fish that prefer to occupy the top of the tank, to give my aquarium a bit more balance (and to look nicer :D )

Thank god, I'm not the only one with a tall tank!!!

I don't know what type of fish would go with the barbs, I was recommended Australia Rainbow fish for the top of my tank. I have a post around here but I'll have to hunt for it....

Can find it, stupid search engine...

What type of barbs do you have? Hatchetfish stay at the top but they are pretty docile, calm fish so you wouldn't want to put them with agressive fish. Also they will hop out if you aren't careful. Plus they are schooling fish so you'd want at least 5-6.

My barbs are one golden barb, one striped barb and two cummings barbs, so they are not really agressive like tigers for example. The tetras I have are two penguin tetras, two serpae tetras, three rummy nosed tetras, and three colombian tetras (which i think are slightly aggressive, but seem to fight mainly amongst themselves)

Hope this helps.

I'm not sure about how agressive those are but I notice you have a lot of schooling fish in small numbers. How many gallons is your tank? (or litres if you do metric)

not sure if this is right, but its a 90 litre tank, so about 23 US gallons if i calculated right

Danio's don't spend all their time at the top but a lot of it. My danio's actually are all over the place but they do spend a lot of time at the top. Wolf would know for sure.

i love my school of marbled hatchetfish. theyre pretty docile as said, but mine seem to hold their own when they have to. they can be major jumpers, so make sure if you get some, that there are NO holes or opening anywhere inthe lid. they love to school so get 6 or more. they also love fast current, so don't be surprised to see them spending all their time in front of the filter. they will wander to lower parts of the tank from time to time but for the most part stay near the surface. great little addition to a tank, and theyre "something different"

get an african butterfly fish, they are big and top dwelling and very no-nonsense. And its a blast feeding them crickets. :D

I don't know whether all are like this and whether they'd get along, but my male gupies tend to hang around the top.
