I am looking at stocking my fish tank with fish that prefer the top section of the tank.

I have currently in my tank some tetras and barbs, but these types seem to only like the bottom half of the tank, which most times makes the tank look slightly empty.

Would welcome any suggestions. :)

i can't help you much on that front as i'm useless for top dwellers. i always get fish that want to be anywhere BUT the surface (except for my white cloud mountain minnows) but it will help other folks if they know what size your tank is and what sort and how many tetras and barbs you've already got :)

In my dad's tank his guppys like to hang around the top :good:

I don't really know because i am a newbie at this but. Anyway

You might want to invest n some hatchet fish as they look really unusual and cool, and never leave the top! :good:

I second the hatchet fish. Very cool weird looking fish that stick to the surface. I've got 3 marble hatchets and they are very entertaining in an odd hanging around, googley eyed, fat belly sort of way. They seem to get on with (or ignore) all the other tank inhabitants, I bought mine on a bit of a whim, but they are my favourites now :D

Hatchets are prone to being bullied so won't work with most barbs.

Which brings me to the obvious question - what species of barbs and tetras? There are so so many!

I'd get a trio of honey gouramies (Colisa chuna/sota) but this depends on what tetras and barbs you have.

Also, what size tank? How many of each fish do you already have?

If they're tiger barbs, then most gouramis wouldn't work. But I've seen tiger barbs and hatchetfish live for a year so far together in a friend's tank without any problems.

how about a nice butterflyfish

(it has a huge expandable mouth)

or to be safe you cant go wrong with a golden panchex

there not bad fish as they dont actually get as big as you might think.
i think they get around the 10cm area but they can eat small fish.
