Can anyone suggest some top dwelling fish, preferably shoaling, that are not prone to jumping (I can't shut my lid completely because of filter attachments)? They would be sharing a 55 UK gall tank with angels, cories, otos and a false SAE.

Thanks :)

You could try a gourami but i'm not sure how compatible they are with angels. I'd recommend nannostomus eques which is known as a variety of names, i bought mine as rocket tailed pencil fish. Do a google search and see what you think. They only grow around 5cm long and swim with their mouths pointed upwards a lot of the time. The only problem being they are difficult to get hold of. I have had my 3 for a couple of years now and haven't come across any others since.

Hmm...i was about to suggest Danios but they are jumpers -_-

Like the previuos 3 posts I keep have danios zebra/leopard/pearl and giant and none of them have jumped yet.Mind you one of my budgies flew out the living room window and flew back in the kitchen window so maybe Im just lucky!!
Giant danios are beautifully marked fish and would look amazing in a big tank.Ive 6 in my 4ft one

My bloodfin tetras never jump, and RARELY leave the top. They are also very tight shoalers (read the fish index page about them ^_^) I don't THINK they would be a problem with angels, assuming you don't get them too small. Mine are about 1.5 inches long. I'm actually considering rehoming them to set up a female betta community in that tank, but I can't... They are just so cute and fun to watch!

Mine were VERY timid their first 2 weeks here, but now they'll swim right up to me (if I have food!)

They are not fin nippers like most tetras, I have had them with bettas with no problem from either party.

I did think about cutting the lid - but somehow I just can't bring myself to do it. :*) :dunno: I originally thought about rummy nose tetras but I think they are more of a mid level fish

Emma12321 - I have thought about pencilfish - only seen them in a book though, never in any of the lfs I go to.

Keddypie - the bloodfin tetras are lovely looking, but I always thought they were a bit nippy.

Danios don't do it for me at all :p Sorry if I sound like I'm downing everyone's ideas, I guess I just don't know what Im looking for! Any more ideas anyone? :)

IMO, Bloodfins are one of the LEAST nippiest tetras of all. I've NEVER seen any of mine nip, even at eachother of my male bettas. They seem to be the most mild-mannered fish ^_^ (though I did have to of them gang up on one of my girl bettas and follow her for 20 minutes, then decide it was no longer fun adn go back to shoaling... Not sure about that!)

Zebra Danios! Get a group of at least five provided your tank is big enough and has the room to spare. My experience of danios is that if they can then they will jump. We often hear splashes in the night of failed bids for freedom from our Danio tank.

You could also get leopard danios, or the long fin varieties of either :D Theyre beautiful things and full of life.

What about a yellow panchax Killifish. They stay at the top. Look in the tff fish inbex :shifty:

yellow panachax/golen panchax are jumpers

they jump through the tiniest gaps, and i know

i had a female who jumped out a few weeks ago and the gaps are tiny. the only way she could have really jumped out is through the filter outtake, swim upcurrent and jump on the cover, and then flip to the floor. my friend didn't see her and stepped on her

the male is fine though and we got him another female!

just cut your hood! it'll look nicer and then you can keep the fish you want. most top dwellers will jump anyway, as they eat fromt he top and often jump out to eat

Those golden panchax are lovely. Well, I have been given lots to think about - if nothing else I am going to have to cut my lid I think. Thanks to everyone for your ideas. :)
