Hiya, new to this forum but have been reading for a good few months now.

I have a 10g cube and have recently replaced the stock pump with a maxijet 1200, i tried using this as a powerhead for an afternoon (cube has compartments at the back for pumps) in the main tank section and my clown was really struggling with the flow, also a lot of my substrate was moved.

I then did a bit of modding and have fitted the maxijet in the back middle section of the tank, with a tube attatching it to the original spray bar to the front, this has led to a much better flow and my clown and other tank inhabitants are coping much better with the flow, plus there is lots more water movement than before.

I was just wondering if there was such a thing as too much water flow, or have i just got a lazy clown

Great forum btw, wealth of information, provided me with most of the knowledge to get the tank up and running in the first place.

Welcome to TFF Andy! :)

It really depends on what your keeping. For the stock standard nano reef containing LPS and softies, 100x turnover is probably way in excess. For a bare bottom SPS nano, 100x turnover is probably something to aim at. If you figure out the value numerically, we can suggest a guide, but most if not all your creatures can cope with higher flow. As for the sand bed, you can just aim the powerhead/pump outlet to the surface in an attempt to stop too much sand being disturbed.

Agreed, 295gph in a 10g tank is only 29.5 times turnover. No problem ther at all :)

Thanks for the comments guys, i have mounted the maxijet at the back, connected to the front via a tube saving me a bit of space in the "main" aquarium. Flow seems much better after replacing the stock one, didnt realise how bad it was until i had tried the Maxijet. Will post pics when i can get my camera to hand.
