Thanks so much OldMan47 and waterdrop - you guys really are great. I guess it's the curse of being "new," but I'm second guessing everything I'm doing. I think I understand something, do it, then wonder if I misunderstood it and just did something bad for the fish. (Hm, well, maybe that's not so much newness as good ol' fashioned paranoia and neuroses... 
)
But thank you both - I feel better about having to do my every 2-3 hour big water change to reduce this awful 1.0 level nitrite spike.
