Too Many Guppies

Hi guys,

My guppies are having so many fry I'm strugling to keep track. I have already gone out and bought a second tank to house some of them (also a problematic Swordie) but if it carries on like this I not going to be able to move for them. So the question is this If I move the male to the second tank leaving only females in the main tank how long will they continue to have fry?

I know they can store sperm but I'm not sure how long for or how many broods they are capable of having in the absence of a male? The lfs will take some of the fry but if anyone would like some and are local just ask, I'll even deliver if your close enough (FOC of course).

Ive seen acouple people from Plymouth around here, hopefully some would take afew guppies off your hands! I would but im all the way across the world I would take the male out ASAP I have no clue how long it takes for them to stop spawning sorry.

Stick a female beta in the tank. I had one batch of fry from my 1 pair of guppies got about 20 or so at the time. Got a female beta and the 12 strongest fastest lil ones lived. Darwins theory survival of the fitest 8) I've only seen one fry since the first batch started mating and haven't seen him in a while. So it was either lunch or it's got a really good hiding place.

That and I think all the kids are still to young to be mating. The Beta even seems to get along well with all the male guppies. I haven't noticed any niping or chasing. They're a nice fish to look at easy to take care of. They don't get very big and if you want could try breeding later with a male. I've heard stories of beta's not getting along with guppies but I think thats because they were mistaken for other beta's. I got mine when it was pretty young; still had the horizontal stripes and was less than 1/2" kinda looked like a zebra danio at the time except for the rounded tail. I think that helped aclamate<sp> her to the live bearers in the tank.

Survival of the fittest was the idea but the fry survived in a tank Guppies, Swordies and Dwarf Gourami any of which would make a ligt snack of them but yet they survive.

Looks like we're off to get another tank today to rearrange everything today. The new tank will houise the fry, the male will be moved seperate from all fry and females as I believe the fry can become pregers at 3 weeks and I don't want that. That should put an end to it for now but man this fishkeeping lark really does take over your house.

Thanks for all the help. I am tempted with the betta idea but was told that although they are very tolerant of ammonia they can not tolerate nitrite and it will be a new tank. On the plus side I managed to fully cycle the last one tank in less than a week by cloning my main tank so shouldn't be too much trouble it's just finding somewhere to put it now.
