I just got a Toadstool Leather yesterday form one of my LFS. It wasn't fully opened at the fish store but he had just got a coral order in that morning... today whe i turned on my lights it started to open and all th little lumps/nob's on the top of it were all out!! but like 30 mins later it closed right up agin.. does anyone know why it doing this?
also the last few days my mushrooms that i have are not getting as big as they usually get!

thanks

i have a toadstool and he "opens" and closes all day, it shouldint be a sign of anything, thats just how they are, as for your mushrooms, try and keep them at the top section of your tank....could help

Ummm, gonna need a full stock list and a description of the flow in the tank to start with. Could be many reasons ...

i have found that my toadstool will close when hit by a fish or when a hermit goes for a bit of a ride on him . although my clown fish play in it all day and it seems happy with that .

Heh, you're proving one of the many theories on clownfish there robb :). Many people theorize that when clonfish exhibit hosting behaviors they either express the same "self" antigens of the nem/coral they host in on their own mucuosal coating. Or that the clowns deposit their own "self" antigens on the coral through deposits of their mucuosal coating placed on the coral itself. Either way the theory is that the clown makes itself chemically look like a nem/coral, or the clown makes the nem/coral chemically think its a clown. The end result is that the nem/coral cannot tell the difference between itself and the clownfish, thus the hosting behavior is tolerated. Unfortunately to my knowledge nobody has proven this theory right or wrong, and the mechanism of "hosting" remains unknown.

i was too very shocked when i sawthe two clowns playing in the toadstool. at first i thought it was just the two clowns playing about ( as they do ) but after watching them over the next few days they began to defend the toadstool( TS). they have now both started to sit in TS. and desplay what look like hosting. they do rub them selves on the TS , and i must say that i have never seen the TS as happy. even when i would class the clowns as playing ruff does not close, but as soon as say the sailfin/ unicorne bumps in to it it will start to retrack. will have to post a video of it soon, or at the worst a pic :) . sorry to but in on the thread :good:

I had a leather toadstool but i got some phospahte absorbing gravel on it and well... :-(

Truthfully, I wouldn't have purchases the TS without seeing it open at the LFS.

just wondering does the toadstool leather ever fully open up (flaten out)? or is it always somewhat curled up?

thanks

It sometimes opens right out depends on the flow and the lighting, mine normally just stayed curled up.
