I'm thinking of getting some Amano shrimp to combat the algae in my tank. It's either that or a bunch of otos. Will I have any problems with any of the fish in my tank seeing the shrimp as a tasty snack? I'm thinking about the gourami and the rams in particular. If I do get the Amanos then how many should I get for a 100g tank? Also, does 1 inch of shrimp equate to 1 inch of fish (i.e. are stocking levels the same?)?

I think it one of those things - you can never be 100% sure....

I added 10 ammanos about 6 months ago to my 400l community. Now 8 left and they seem fine. Some said the clown loaches would eat them but no. Don't know about your rams though. Fasinateing to watch a good addition imho and I don't include them in fish "s.

btw I've also got 8 ottos B) busy little fish

:)

I have a ten gallon tank and I have 6 Cherry Shrimp, they don't get as big as Amano's tho. For a 100 gal. tank, I don't think you can have too many shrimp. I loose the six in my 10 gal. enough. You may want to add a few ottos because the shrimp don't seem too good at cleaning the glass, even with waaay too many snails (even 1 is too many) to help. I love my cherry shrimp  But, they are hard to come by and I bought as many as I could afford (3, well 4 because I know the guy, for $9.99) They have had some sucess in breeding them, and have been able to keep the strain alive and still sell off the kids, they now have tons more than they started off with. But enough about them, I think that any shrimp is a good addition to your tank, other than maybe a camaroon. I haven't heard of Rams eating these guys other than their young, but I don't know much about gourami's.

Get 'em, you'll love 'em. Just don't pay 10 bucks for 3 if you're gonna stock a 100 gal. tank.

i just think you should get some suckers. about ten of them for your tank.or depending on how many fish you have.

I brought 2 zebra? shrimp they spawned and all of a sudden i had about 50 shrimp!! My discus ate alot, but i reckon i still have well over 20!! They keep my plants spotless.. I used to have hair alf=gae but its all gone now... And they r definately interesting to watch!!

IMO shrimp would be like snails in that they may not count as much as fish on your bioload but like all living creatures they do emit waste. This can definitely affect the water quality. I have never had shrimp but have had snails more than I have wanted that's for sure! Anyway, I would just be concerned about the filtration and water quality if you add too many living things as this could be harmful, not knowing what all is in your tank and sizes of each fish, I wouldn't even begin to try and tell you what else, if anything to put in it.

after much research in the last week, I will have to agree with allie. before a recomendation could be properly made it would be helpful to know the amount of fish currently in the tank. how well is your filter setup handling the current bio load? shrimp are definatly neet to watch though.
