To Light or Not To Light

Hi,

This has probably been asked a million times before, but I couldn't find anything in the search.

When do I use my light?

Do I leave it on all day? Do I leave it on all night?

My apartment is very bright and well lit, but of course no direct sunlight hits the aquarium.

if you don't have any live plants in your tank, then just use the light when you are there, ie. at night after work/school till bedtime.

I have my lights on a timer so that they come on at 10:00 and go off at 22:30 every day, whether I am there or not.

I have nocturnal fish and I think it's good to have a routine for them. You should have your light on for abotu 10 hours per day, less if you have no plants I suppose but there should definatley be a 'night time'.

Great idea. I'll purchase a light timer to control the lighting. I will have plants by the end of the day today so I'll having the light run for 10 hours.
