Once upon a time it was called Mothering Sunday, and church services were held to celebrate it. My mother always insisted it be called Mothering Sunday and that Mother's Day was an Americanism. Do you know how hard it was to find a Mothering Sunday card?
Originally it was a day people went to their home or 'mother' church which was the main church of the parish. On the 4th Sunday of Lent it was considered important to worship in the main church of the parish instead of the local chapel. Then it became the day that child servants were given the day off, and they would go home to visit their mothers.

There were always a few, but most of them were little flowers and half a book of poetry. As her eyesight was failing in her last few years I needed a card with big flowers and not many words. I usually managed to find one but I started looking just after Christmas My mother-in-law was quite happy with a card that said Mother's Day, so her cards were much easier.


Nowadays, very few people have even heard of Mothering Sunday and everyone just celebrates Mother's Day. It was my mother who told me about the original, centuries old origins. Mother's Day in the UK just uses the same date as Mothering Sunday.
