hi everyone
I set up my new tl 550 three weeks ago so im kinda new to everything

I have 12 kilos of live rock which are now covered in algae, I bought four turbo snails and two blue legged hermits today to clear it up
will this be enough?

Grateful for any advice :good:

hi dill

HOW long do you keep your lights on for

is your aquarium near a window

thanks scott

:hi: to the salty side. Both my sister (Trod )and I also have the 550 :good:

We all love watching a tank develop so how about giving us some info on where you are up to in your set up. So, what are your stats, what have you got in the tank, cured or uncured lr, what are your plans, any mods to the tank etc. and of course a nice ft shot :good:

As my sister said you eventually need a bigger cuc but what you have for now is probably big enough, you want enough food for them! However I would get the Nass snails as they will turn the sand over :good:

When you say you have algae, what colour is it, if it is a brownish colour then that is diatoms a natural part of the cycling process which your cuc will deal with :good:

Anyway, give us a bit more info and we will be glad to help you

PS - don't forget to read all the set up threads for the Orca 550, there are several out there including my sisters and mine (called our journey to the salty side). look for Charlies and Danni too :good:

Hi everyone

I have been reading all your threads over the past couple of weeks and have found them really helpful.

Lights are on for 10 hrs and then 2 hrs moonlight, tank is to the side of a window but keep the blinds shut. There is a lot of brown algae and also a lot of die off.

The tank has been running three weeks, live rock has been in two weeks, put in 2 blue hermit crabs and 4 turbo snails yesterday.

Ammonia - 0
Nitrite 0.1mg
Nitrate 12.5
PH 8.5

I have a couple of questions - I worked out the litres on the aquarium calculator (210L), is this correct, there wasnt much info that came with the tank. Man in the shop said this could hold roughly 10 fish??? What do you think, don't want to overload. Was planning on 2 clowns, 2 fijan blue, 2 fire shrimp, 2 skunk cleaner shrimp, haven't made mind up about the rest, don't know what coral yet either.

Thanks for all your replies - will get photos sorted out :good:

TL550 are about 120L, Sorry but I would say 10 fish is to many, it usually depends on the size of fishes but I wouldn't have any more than 5. I have an orca TL550 stocked with
2 Clownfish
1 yellow assessor
1 purple firefish
1 Mandarin
2 cleaner shrimp
Various CUC
1 emerald crab (wouldn't recommend one though :grr: )

and thats my lot :good

If it is a Fiji Blue Devil Damsel you are looking at, these can be rather aggressive and I would personally avoid any Damsel fish, but I'm sure that someone with more experience of these will be able to tell you more

That is part of the tanks cycle, Diatoms, we all got that and your cuc will sort that out :good:

Your Nitrate needs to be below 12 and pref. 0, so do a water change :good: your cycle is well on it's wait but the Nitrite also needs to be 0 so hopefully a water change will sort that out :good:

No, it's as my sister said, 120 lt

NO, way - an inch for every gallon is a rough guide for a newbie

Sorry no again, two lots of damsels will only mean war

Thanks for all your replies - will get photos sorted out :good:

Hi,
thats fine i thought 210ltr was too much anyway  .so much for calulations, to be fair to guy in fish shop, i did tell him i had 210ltr tank!!! Will definitely get 2 clowns and 2 shrimps but will have a re-think what other fish to get, not going to rush things. will do a water change and work on nitrite and nitrate levels :good: . Do you recommend 20% or 50% change? Would you suggest no more additions to the tank until these levels are sorted out.

Cheers :good: More questions will be on the way no doubt!!

I wouldn't add anything more until the water is right :good: Think I would do a big water change and wait a couple of day and then test

Questions are good, ask away :D

Hi Dill, two more fish would be pushing it ------- maybe a goby for the bottom of the tank :good:

ps just noticed you live close to Trod and I = maybe a few frag swops in the months to come :good:

how bout a mandarin or goby :good:

you need to have a pod culture set up for a mandarin or buy pods monthly - some of them can be trained to eat frozen but they still need pods - I would wait until you have some more experience :good: Goby would be good :kana:
