Tiny fry

Hi there

My platies and Guppies had babies at various intervals from the beginning of September 04 - I separated them from the big tank to save them from being eaten. they range in age - the 6 platies are the oldest - the other 30 guppies are all different ages.

I started feeding them liquid fry food and now crushed flake food

I was hoping to reintroduce them to my main tank soon, but they just don't seem to be growing and are still way too tiny to put in there....

The platies which are 4 months old are still only around 1cm - I am sure when I had platiy young years ago they grew much faster than this and I kept them just the same!

Whats wrong with these small fry! they seem extra short and one is growing slightly bent....

if you turn the temperature of your aquarium up this can help with the development of the fry. Were they born premature?

Liquidfry will pollute your water,so do not feed that,And make water changes to ensire faster growth.and have more feedings

What size tank are the fry in? How often are you feeding them?

are you using a breeding net in the big tank? in my experience, this is the best way, because the water parameters usually are far better than in a smaller tank. After a month or so they are big enough to go free...

They are in a separate 1.5 gallon tank with own filter heater etc... I'm doing weekly water changes, temp 80F , feeding 3 times daily crushed flake food now.

I have two or three Guppies which have just got to 1 inch which I am going to put back in the big tank.

I might transfer some back into the big tank in a breeding trap to see if they grow any better.

Um, if you're talking 40ish fry in a 1.5 gallon tank, I think that's your problem. Fish give off hormones to restrict growth to other fish, something to ensure they are the biggest fish in the tank. But it kind of back fires unless you're doing 100% water changes two or three times a day.

Thanks to the advise I received here...my platies and guppy fry are still now freely living in the big tank! None got eaten and they have grown lots. Most of the guppies are pale yellow with lovely bright red tails. Will have to rehome some now.

Nice to hear

I have MANY guppy fry.....10 of these were raised in a breeding trap in my 10gal tank, I thought they would get more food this way. I noticed they looked slightly smaller than the others (in with the mums in my 10gal)...so I released them with the other fry (and mums)...the ones in the trap are half the size of the other fry, some which were born 3 days after the ones in the trap.

My fry from the tank are 10mm...the others would be lucky to be 6mm....

They got the same food at the same time...the only diff being that the ones in the trap didn't have gravel tro scrounge around for food.....

The tiny things are swimming happily with their mums
