Time Between Filter Changes?

Echo what Johnbull says, saved me a fortune!!!
I was thinking that I could use the filter media inside my internal filter, and pack it around the existing carbon media, saving me the use of the internal filter ( and the extra electricity costs?!

Those Jewel sponges are not exactly cheap are they,in what way are they different from a normal sponge ?  Dont wanna sound a tight wad, but is there anything else you can use apart from shop bought sponges ?
 
 
 
 

I've used all sorts of sponges. The ones I liked best were the cheapest scrubby type that came in a bag of maybe 10 for just a couple of bucks. The trick is to get sponges that don't have any additives, such as detergent or bleach or any other chemicals.
