Hi i was just wondering if anyone else keeps M.tigrinus

Haven't kept a Merodontotus tigrinus myself but we have had them in at work and i have read somewhat about them. I suspect CFC is probably one of the most knowledgable people on this forum about shovelnose catfish so if you have something very specific to ask he may well know.

What are you wanting to know about them? Most of the "general" info you should need is here:

What size tank is yours in and how big is it?

Ben

Bit longer to go yet then, 20" should be expected. What size tank is he in? Any other nice big cats? My biggest are my 2 lima shovelnose although i have some other fairly big pims.

Ben

i think he should grow to 24inch but we will have to wait and see as i havnt had much luck with the tigs in the past and this is the 3rd one i have had

I am hoping to pick up a tigrinus later on this year, ive been looking at them longingly for years but didnt want to have to risk moving a large delicate fish when we moved out of this rented flat.

How long has your taken to reach 15" and how did you lose your previous 2 tigs? Forwarned is forarmed so any tips from your experince would be appreciated.

to tell the truth i have no idear why i lost the last 3 they were fine and feeding one night dead the next

the 1st 2 i had (at different times) i got at 6inch and grew them fast oup to 10 inch then dead for no reason

the last one i had was doing great and i grew it up to 12inch then dead for no reason

i was just about to come to terms that a tig was just one of the fish i cant keep when a freind of mine gave me a call and said i could have the tig he had just got from the goldfish bowe which he paid £500 for as a gift so as the fish was for free i thought why not give it one last go

their was nothing wrong with the water in my tank and all the params were fine (ph,gh,kh,nitrite ,nitrate and their s plenty of airation and water movment)

so all i can say is that tigs are not a walk in the park and are not as hardy as some people say

Shotgate used to keep a tig and they said that it was really succeptible to any detriment in the water conditions. They had it a couple of times looing like it was going to keel over for no reason. They had far more trouble with that than the rays and they were all on the same centralised system.

the tig in shotgate used to belong to a freind of my who took it into the shop as a echange for rays years ago

i was going to buy the one at shotgate as they were going to let me have it at a good price just before they closed down but then my freind let me have the one i have now

and you cant look a gift horse in the mouth
:D
