My husband really likes Tiger Barbs...I was wondering if they would do well in our 10 gallon tank, or if that would be too small. If need be, I could move the white clouds to the bigger tank, if they wouldn't do well with the TBs. Also, would they do ok with our two otos? I was really wanting to move those to the smaller tank, and get some cories to go in the bigger tank. Thanks for your help!!

Hi,

I wouldn't think that tiger barbs would be suitable for your 10gallon as they are quite agrgressive. I suppose it depends on what eklse you want in there, but they should be kept in groups of 6+ to minimise any aggression towards other fish and IME this does not always work.

I was fooled by an uneducated LFS and purchased 2 albino tiger barbs when we were first setting up.

Now that we know what we are doing, tiger barbs are pretty agressive. Ours are still babies, but we are sitting back and waiting for the day when they start to nip our other fish and they get returned.

So far, they've been ok, but we'll see.

Just something to consider...

It may make all the difference on the world if you added a couple more. This way they are play fishting with each other rather than nipping other fish.

Just an idea, not sure if you have room etc.

Actually, that's all I was going to put in there (4-6) tiger barbs. I just wanted to be sure they wouldn't be miserable in that small of a tank...

They might be, they can get quite big. I def wouldn't put rosy barbs in, mine at least has a thing about swimming back and forth the frong and it doesn't really have the room in my tank which is a bit bigger (see sig). Other than that it could be ok. Will the danios still be in there? I have 6 barbs and other fish in a 16UK/19US tank.

I was going to move the 3 white clouds out of my 10 gallon, and make it a species tank with 4-6 tiger barbs. All my other fish would be in the 30 gallon...

That's a good idea. 6 tiger barbs in a well filtered 10g species tank with lots of plants should do just fine.

Sounds like a cool tank actually. Hmm...

My 13 tiger barbs completely ignore my 3 ottos.

But then again, i have a 40gal tank with a ton of plants so it's easy to get away

I think it would be a great idea to start with, and since they will be all alone, they should be fine. I would keep my eye on them though as they grow, because when they are full grown you may want to increase the size of theit tank. The lfs are selling them very small, so they should be ok in the 10 for a while. Just be prepared that as they do grow, they may outgrow thier home and need a new one.

Since we're on the topic of Tiger Barbs...

I recently set up a 30 gallon tank and let it cycle, added 4 Tiger Barbs, and added 4 Tiger Barbs the next week. Just wondering if this is a problem: after I added the new ones, I noticed two of the Barbs doing what looked like kissing. Their mouths were together but they seemed kind of violent. Their fins were completely spread out and large too. Not sure if they were new or old ones or one of each, and not sure if this is just a minor thing to set up dominances or something I should worry about.
