Why do they loose thier color, but get it back like a day later?

yes its stress..tiger barbs get stressed really easily and have been known to act weird because of it...being color loss is a comon effect..they also float about the tank like they are dying...and some even swin sideways and upsidedown

Tankmates?

or water paremeters..(hence I've never checked them as its not my tank... LOL.....)

It's a possibility it's one or the other or both.

what are you keeping them with? do you have high traffic around the tank area?
it would most likely be due to stress.
