I bought 3 medium sized tiger barbs today and 2 black finned shark/catfish. One of my barbs is kind of rolling over. She swims fine when she is startled but otherwise she just drifts, rolls over, and swims sideways. What can I do to help her??

Thanks,

Charity

I dont have one set up. I do have a 10 gallon tank and water conditioner/fish slime protectant. should I set this up and move her???

I did a 1/3 water change of the original aquarium in case it was ammonia. I also noticed a black finned shark/catfish having problems, I took the other aquarium and moved them to it. The shark looks better, but I think Im going to lose the tiger barb. Any other suggestions????

Anything is appreciated.

UPDATE: I have lost 1 tiger barb. I believe that I am going to lose 1 black finned shark. Im not sure I understand why this is happening. 1 of the black finned sharks looks like he is thriving. He is constantly playing and looks very happy. The rest of my fish ( 2 pink tetras, 3 zebra danios-very small, 1 plecostomus sp?, the two other remaining tiger barbs, and the remaining black finned shark) are all fine??? Could it be something ph related? i do have a few natural river rocks from here in indiana (who knows mabye some contain limestone -dosnt look it but mabye?)

Any ideas?

Thanks

do you have a water test kit? i would test the water first. how long has this tank been set up?

the way to check rocks for being safe for the aquarium is to put a few drops on them. if it fizzes, they are not safe. don't test the rocks while they are in the aquarium. if it does not fizz, rinse the rocks in hot water to remove any vinegar or residue before returning to the tank

Hi,

It has been set up with 3 danios and two pink tetras for almost two weeks now. I am going to go get a water test kit today and an ammoni-rid pack for my filter (it says that it helps keep ammonia to an ok level in new/cycling tanks). I think I might have caused a bacteria bloom or ammonia poisioning by adding the new fish.

Thanks for the tip on testing the rocks, I B) will try that today.

I really appreciate the advice.

UPDATE: Well I have lost 2 of the 3 tigerbarbs. I lost one of the sharks too. I noticed when I woke up this morning that the remaining shark had some discoloration to him. We returned the dead fish to the lfs and she went and looked at the tanks that they were in. Sure enough all of the remaining sharks had ich. There were two other dead tigerbarbs in the tank that they came from. She gave me a credit and I figured I would treat the remaining tank, and then restock. I will make sure to treat them in a hospital tank for ich first before adding them to the main one. Sure enough when I returned home the remaining shark had full fledged spots on him. Seems to have came on fast. Oh well. Back to the beginning.  :S

Sorry to hear of your loss :(

Your tank is still cycling - please do not add any more fish... The process is very stressfull on them. It is also too many fish to add so soon - what size tank are they in?

I'd urge you to read some of the pinned topics in the beginners section - particularly THIS ONE
