Can someone please help...

I sucessfully got my tiger barbs to breed (at last)... however, after having noticed the eggs - which looked heathy initially - they started to dossolve after a couple of hours. Any ideas??

Here are some of the things that I did that might have had a contributing factor:

- Changed 20% water. I did this using a dechlorinator...
- Turned off the internal filter
- Tried to remove some of the gunk between the eggs, but quite a bit still remained
- Didn't clean the tank b4 breeding (didn't seem overly dirty - but might have been)

temp quite high at 81F

It seems to much of a co-incidence that after fiddling - they died... so i suspect that it was something that i did! (My suspicion is that it was point 1 or 4)

Any ideas most welcome!

Thanks,
Tetra

Why did you turn the internal filter off doing your self no favours there,to stop them getting sucked into the filter put a pair of tight cut in half over it,also you can add melafix to the tank to stop the eggs getting infected.

you definitly shouldn;t have to turn off the filter. All you need to do is cover it with pantyhose and use a rubberband to keep it down.

Thanks for the reply guys/gals....

Dragoon - i'll try that idea, thx. you should have seen some of the less that ingeneous ways i came up with.... this is much better thanks..

Does anyone think that this water change might have caused some damage?

thx again,
Tetra

Did you remove the barbs after they spawned? ..... You shouldnt handle the eggs once they are laid ..... I dont think the water change would affect the eggs...unless you poured the water right on top of the eggs and disturbed them with it. HIH

Hi Digital,

Yeah - i removed the adults straight away.

I put in 20% of the water which i must say did 'flow' over the eggs.... not to a large extent, but would have moved a couple.

Although I didn't handle the eggs, I might have move a few around to try and get rid of some of the dirt in between them. How important is it you do this? Also - if someone knows a inavative way of doing it - i'm keen to hear (reading some of these posts i've quickly realised that i quite feeble when it comes to adaptation!!)...

I used a spawning grate which was about 1 inch off the ground for the eggs to fall through - which I thoroughly recommend... however - maybee 1 inch was too high for the eggs to be fertalised?? thought that they got fertalised on the way down, but just asking...

Finally, anyone know when my female (I've got a few females actually, but knowing my luck i'll choose the same damn one) gets back to egg laying fitness??

Thanks all for your help,

Tom
