Three Foot Breeding Project - Give Me Some Ideas

Called Ashford up, guy said they didn't have shell dwelling species! Did you go buy them all?! :D :D

thanks for the suggestions, I've been doing my reading.....

really like the plecs suggested, very interested to see some decent cash could be made (although that's not my objective)

the Sumbu Dwarf looks fantastic, good shout!

....still like the Nichols as well. Hmmm, choices, choices!

Any more?

Kiriyama on here has had a breeding group of Altolamprologus compressiceps "Sumbu Dwarf" for well over a year now.

How about four eyed fish? Even though they are livebearers they are unusual. A species of pencilfish?

four eyed fish - now there's something different! Never seen them available though.

I saw a fully grown Anomalochromis thomasi at a LFS recently - beautiful little fish. Very similar in shape and markings to laetacara species, so I was amazed to find it's an African native. That's going on the shortlist.

The thomasi cichlids are lovely, you dont see them too often... mainly because they look an awful lot like rams but with much less colour for most of their lives.... i loved them though!

Anableps (four eyes) get quite big i believe?

indeed - the juvis they have look incredibly drab - silver with a few dark spots. It's no wonder they've had a tank full of them for months.

Tell you what... i would kill to have my Etroplus canarensis projects back again :( These cichlids are incredible and to have a cichlid that actively shoals as well was a whole new experiance.

It was also awesome to be one of a few that had a decent group (12) of these fish and growing at a rate of notts as few few owned them and no one had got past spawning and even that was one off... dont know what their status is any more... but i know my ex killed all my canarensis when i had to leave, i went back to get them and they'd been stuck in with adult oscars... they were only 1.5" long!! :-( But they were showing amazing behaviours, the dominant males herded their own females about and stole each others females too which meant a lot of displaying... *sighs sadly*

I love cichlids, nothing beats them for personality but now, if i was to find a breeding project... id look more long term. I would want an unusual species, doesnt have to be cichlid, would need to see if there was demand or even interest in th species first because its one thing planning to home one clutch of babies but what about the next lot.. and the next lot....

One of my posts with photos of my canarensis is on p27 of the cichlid section on the pfk forums, it was only 2 years ago and i sound so immature and petulant!! LOL

Pretty sure the bariliodes have a different name now?! But either way... they are absolutely gorgeous fish!! They would be fine! Jae barbs are gorgeous too... tho if trying to really breed, dithers will only eat the babies :p

Mats has a lovely group of them, only seen them in photos so far, but I might get a chance to see them in the flesh before he moves (depending on what happens about him getting my S. decora, we nearly did a visit to Enfield Wildwoods Yesterday, but I botteld it last week when I looked at the practicalities of clearing my Rio240 to use as a big QT for 3 African schoolers (B. longipinnis; A. spoilopterus; P. debauwi (if that is what they really have and not P. buffei).

 I know he does, I sold them to him!! :good:
