dream tank.jpgi am wondering if it will work and what fish you can keep in the top and what frog at the bottom

Well, The only issue with this and it's stuff you learn in school. As the water rushes over the dirt, it "overtime" breaks it down and therefore something like that wont last forever, HOWEVER. You could glue gun a plastic panel then cover it with dirt/mud or whatever, At least then you have a solid base to work on.

Other than that, I've never really seen it done before, Just the timing with the pump has to be prefect with the waterfall and you'll need to keep it topped up daily.

polystyrene rock base? would have to be well sealed at the sides but no reason it couldnt work that I can think of.

I can see several issues with this, not necessarily insurmountable ones, but worth pondering.

Firstly, you'll get a lot of splashing, and a lot of evaporation, from moving warm water, so it'll need topping up a lot more than you'd probably expect.

I also can't see any way of keeping a frog in just one section, or fish in just one for that matter, they will mix, so they'd need to be compatible regardless.

Unless the tank is big then you've got very little water volume there, so you'll be very limited on stocking.

And the bigger the tank, the larger the force of the water on the left side pushing the wall.  So, it will need some sort of bracing, I believe.  I suppose the simplest choice might be a panel of glass, as thick as the tank, and then siliconed into place.  The earthen area could then be attached to the glass as necessary.

That looks like an amazing experience and experiment! If you do make it, I would love to see pics and video! Hopefully you can figure it out, it would be beautiful to see!

thanks guys
