can anyone tell me if fish have a reasonably advanced thought process? for example, in most fish suppliers fish are only with their own kind, swimming about in a small-ish tank with little or no features e.g. rock formations, plants etc. we get them home and they're introduced into a tank full of exciting areas to explore. has it been proved scientifically that fish are aware of their surroundings in that sense i.e. will they be happier in an aquarium with things in it as oppose to an empty one, or are fish as happy no matter what their surroundings?

also eyesight, do we know how well an average fish can see in comparison to us humans? is their eyesight pretty dismal or do some of them have good eyesight i.e. on a par with us?

just wondering

Recently I spent an hour trying to catch a few specific fish in my aquarium that has the usual assortment of fish, plants, and other decor. I now know why lfs keep tanks of the same kind together with little or no decor. Believe me, if fish are healthy they aren't the easiest things to catch and it's frustrating when they dart behind a plant.

I have no idea about their eyesight.

Some catfish are completely blind, while most cichlids have superb eyesight and can recognize their owners face over other people. Each species is different.

It's scientifically shown that fish readily respond to their environment through instinct. A fish developed to spend time in plants are least stressed in plants. Fish developed to spend time in shoals are least stressed in shoals, etc. etc.

What so my fish will know what I look like?

Whe I get the food out they do swim around alot faster!

Mine already know when I'm gonna feed them. They work it out real fast and, apart from the newbies who have yet to experience a w/c, will deliberately swim around the gravel hoover when I put it in. My lone harlequin was extremely happy to finally get some pals but those 4 will shoal together with the tetras and the endlers as they did earlier. Seems to have calmed down my nippy x-ray, having more fish in the tank.
I have been quite lucky (touch wood) so far and they all have settled very quickly and happily. With all eating happily at evening meal despite only being in there a few hours.
The platties and the tetras have been known to come and stare out at me when I'm watching them and won't dash away if I put my hand on the glass. They DO know when it's you or a complete stranger.
I never would have given fish the respect they deserve in regards to intelligence, personality etc before I had my own. ALthough I do admit to being totally in love with my new endlers. I have a deep craving to hunt down females, give them a home with the boys in their own tank and let them breed.
Hugs,
P.
P.S:Sorry, kinda went on there! :*)
