This morning when I turned on the tank lights, my Jag was up near the top of the tank looking like he'd been in a major battle. When he got to where I could see the other side of him, he had this white filmy crap on his body and in that eye. Well, I called to make sure the LFS had some Myacin, went and picked some up, came home and moved the fish that were in the 30g out so I could move the Jag into it since I still have the GT in my 20g hospital tank (doing a 2nd round of Hexamit on him, ugh) and then I went to get the Jag and he was dead.
I can't believe it. I am in tears. I really was attached to that fella. And I really can't believe that whatever this was, it took him that fast. I mean, it wasn't even 4 hours later!
This sucks and my heart feels heavy.

sorry to hear that missy. tht is why even having salt on hand with the tankbusters is a good idea. when a fish is diseased his gill function is restricted. salt helps to maintain the proper gill function. would say to have meds on hand, but if you do not have any problems, they do lose their effectiveness. i also keep clout on hand since it is one of the meds that does not lose it's effectiveness over time.

Aww. I'm so sorry, missy. I lost a juvenile golden angel last week just as quickly. He looked perfectly healthy and was acting normal one minute, lying flat on the gravel the next. I quickly rearranged some fishies so I could quarantine him and added some metronidazole, but he was gone in NO time. :-(

OMG missy!!!!!

I am so sorry to hear that! :-(

I remember the day you got him and you were so excited and I loved all of your stories and seeing how happy you were with him.

I don't know what to say. :(

I just lost both fish that I just bought from cichlidmaster too. I know how you feel.

man that blows for both of you (missy and smb) any plans on replacing the fish that have been lost?

I plan on replacing them asap. I can't stand the thought of having an empty 75.

I am undecided on what I want tho.

I love Native American fish and cichlids both.

I am going to put sand in my tank tomorrow. I haven't ever had a sand sub and always wanted one so...

I would like to get a warmouth or Lepomis cyanellus (green sunfish) as NA's go. As for cichlids, really the only one I'm looking at is a red tiger motaguense. I've had a few mota's before and they were some of the most aggro I've ever had and would like to try a red tiger.

Please missy, post back. I don't like you being gone like this.

I am very sorry to hear about your loss missy......also very sorry about yours smb....I was just about to ask for pics of your new fellas before I read this thread.....It always sux to lose a fish....especially when you see a problem and there just isn't enough time to do something about it. :-(
Sorry.

I love my sand sub.... I hate thinking of doing any more tanks with a gravel substrate.

I'm back. My hubby took me to the LFS to get some more Myacin to go ahead and treat everything left in the 55g (My 8"Oscar, 4.5" Texas and about a 7"common sailfin pleco).
While we were there he got me two new Africans, a Snow White and an Albino Red fin something or other. (Can't remember) Afterwards he took me out for drinks and got me feeling pretty toasted.
I've lost fish before, but its never hurt as bad as this one. They really do become like part of your family.
smb, I can't believe you've lost *both* of your new guys. What happened with the odo? Here we are in the same boat and I was gone. Really sorry my friend.

But, to turn this towards an upward note, we will both survive to tell yet more fish stories right?
Peace.

I have no idea what happened. The odo looked in perfect conition, was eating well (until the last 2 days) feces was colorful, I can only think there was some intestinal disease is all.

Yep, we'll have many more great fish to enjoy. That's a great way to look at it too, missy. :)

We'll be swapping stories on all the boards again in no time.

I've been thinking of getting 6 red devils and letting them grow out and keeping the meanest and most outgoing male and then when he gets around 6" I'll get 3 Mbunas. That's my M.O. for most of my tanks. I want to get a M. chipokae to add in there.

You know for sure what you're going to do yet?

Well, for now I'm not planning on getting any more fish. I'm treating the tank the Jag was in with erythromyacin to be on the safe side, or at least I hope its on the safe side. My 8" Oscar and 4.5" Texas are still in that tank.

I was going to redo the 30g for my Africans but my kids goldfish has some weird red spot on it so I've moved Goldie into it and started treating with Melafix. This means I have 3 tanks that I'm treating with different meds now. As I said previously, I'm still treating my GT with Hexamit.

I did get 2 new Africans yesterday. A snow cichlid and an albino red-fin something. Both really cool looking. If I can get either of those other 2 tanks freed up, I'm going to add some rockwork to it and move some of my Africans.
Think I'll be waiting a while to get another Jag. I would really love to, but I think I'll hold off.
But, that said, I'm trying to talk my hubby into letting me get an Argentea Veija B)
I really really want one! I think they are awesome!

You definately have your hands full, that's for sure. :D

I can't wait to see what you get and hope everything works out with the other fish you have.

I've never had a Argentea Vieja before. They are pretty close to a Nandopsis haitiensis as far as colors go and they look cool!

Are they aggro, community etc?

Well, I'm just starting to research them, but what very limited reading I've done so far indicates they are about mid-level aggro. They have a thread on Cichlasomania about them with some really great pics if you ever lurk about on there you should check them out.

I just think they look so cool. I would want to try and get a female tho because I really don't care for huge nuchal humps. (Weird for a cichlid fan, I know!)

I'll have to check it out. It's not really weird to not like nuchal humps. I like them but have seen some that look terrible, imo.

They do look like a really pretty fish and hopefully you'll be able to get one. :)
