I've had my mom platy in the fry tank for two weeks now. She's been boxy for a week, I can almost count the little eyeballs in her tummy (visible for a week) and she's been hiding behind the filter and not eating (just spitting the food back out) for four days now. Maybe I'm being impatient, but should I be worried? Shouldn't she have had them by now?

I can assure you. She will not drop them while you are watching her and waiting. Thats just the way they are. I am convinced they do it deliberately. She will drop them at the most inconvenient time to you. i.e. when you have no time to scoop her out before she eats them.

Good luck with the fry, when they come and keep us updated.

Trust me all you need is patience  .My black molly gave birth on sunday early morning. When I woke up there were 27 fry swimming around and the other pregnant fish in the tank didn't seem interested in them at all. This was my first batch of fry and it felt like forever before she gave birth. The night before she gave birth I fed her plenty of freeze dried bloodworms and she ate all of them.Just make sure the temp. is around 79-82 degress and keep up the water changes and you should have fry real soon.

Try giving her lots and lots of cover plants, plastic or real, it doesn't matter. The more safe and secure she feels the more likely she is to have them. Plus it will give the babies a better chance of not getting eaten. In the tanks that my girls have fry in, the ends are so heavily planted you'd think they couldn't swim through them but they love it. They squeeze themselves in there and the other fish don't harrass them.

Okay, I just removed the last batch of fry (this was the first) so she's the only one in the tank now. The others are big enough, they went into the tank with two other platies and a cherry barb. That should make her feel better, there are plenty of plastic plants and rocks, and a cave in the center for the fry to hide. Now the only thing that might bother her are the two snails, so I'll just try to be more patient. I just hope she doesn't have them all and eat them like last time. But I can see through the belly, there's LOTS of babies! I'll put up pictures when she has them.
