Sooo I saw this little guy looking tattered and sad in his cup of blue water (why do they do that??) at Petco and had to take him home. I had all intentions of keeping him in my 55 Gallon with the rest of the crew but my female Gourami started to pick on him. I know male Bettas are supposed to be solitary but I believe it's the personality of the fish, not the breed. He was shy and hiding under a log the whole time so I thought I'd get him his own home! It's just a little 1.5 Gallon but it's got a filter and heater and even threw a live plant in there for him :) I figured it was much more humane than a fish bowl. What do you all think?

He's stunning!! And his tank looks good as well. I'm sure he'll be very happy in there.

Are both live plants? If one is plastic, then take it out, as could rip his fins.

Hopefully he likes his new home!
Just a heads up, his fins are looking a little tattered, but that's nothing clean water and small, daily water changes can't fix :good:

Also, just for future reference, bettas and gouramis don't usually mix :good:

blue water, is usually water with a bit too much dechlorinator in it, which is a good thing, as our tap water had chloring and other chemicals which can kill fish, and the bacterial inhabitants in a cycled tank.
betta and guoramis, are both part of the same family...anabantoids...these fish both have labarinth organs which means they can take air straight from the surface air without using gills...its a natural selection trait which allows them to live in their natural habitat...fields of shallow water.
And as for the fish's personality...siamese fighter fish, are by nature fighters, so are guorami...a female guorami will fight for her territory, much like a female lion and another animal. As fishkeepers we must obey the laws of nature, or the betta with suffer stress...which lowers immune system and the fish is less able to fight off diseases...and therefore get ill....hence why he already has torn fins...could be a finrot case trying to heal. a lot of people think that bettas can survive in small bowls or smaller quantities of water....they shouldn't really be placed in anything smaller than 5 gallons....it would naturally have 100's of square miles of shallow waters to swim in. also, as already stated, only silk or real plants should be used with bettas and any other fish with long flowing fins, as they are very thin and tear easily leaving them open to infection and death. I am sure you already know this, but just pointing a few things out, in case any newbies are reading
thanks

What a very pretty boy. I agree with you about the personalities of the fish as far as their aggression but some speciecies when mixed will have a much higher percentage of personalities that will be aggressive to each other. I agree with LilyRose too that the Gourami and Betta is a bad mix as the percentage of them not getting along would be high.

It's funny that Bettas are thought of as aggressive fighting fish and it's true when mixed with their own kind. It has been my obsrvations that rarely it is the Betta that is the aggressive one when mixed with another fish species that won't get along. That said, they'll only take so much pushing around before they fight back.

I had a swordtail in with a Betta once in a community tank and this swordtail insisted on being the tank boss and bullied everything in this community tank. The swordtail demanded the whole tank as it's territory. The other fish soon became submissive to the swordtail and at first the Betta did too. But then he blew a bubble nest and when that swordtail try to get anywhere near it the Betta would move forward directly in the path of the swordtail flaired up to almost twice his size and that swordtail would dart away. The Betta put his foot (fins) down (up) and declared possession of that part of the tank and the swordtail never bothered him again. It was kind of funny too because from then on the swordtail would try to test the betta by slowly inching towrd it but any time that swordtail got half way over to the betta he'd start to flair and the swordtail would turn around in frustration. Loving the Betta and hating the bully swordtail I loved seeing that! :)

Love him! His tank is nice as well. He would benefit from a few more plants. Make sure you do plenty of waterchanges in the next few weeks while the filter cycles.
Cheers

Delta tail are a great cheaper alternative to the Half Moon and a step up from Veil tails.

He's a veil tail actually, just flaring at his own reflection  I have heard that most veil tails are considered "mutts" of Betta fish. I had no idea, I just picked him cause he had the best coloration and looked like he needed to get out of that plastic cup! He is really enjoying his new home though. I took out the plastic plant that was in there and put a few baby java ferns in there. :good:

Yes I'm surprised these are being sold as veil tails on aquabid as well at the same time also as delta, VT to me has always been this type and their tails dont flare.
