I remember it was some time ago when starting out in this hobby in ernest (about the same time that I discovered this forum) that I came accross this syndrome.

When going into the LFS and displaying my new found knowledge gleened from this forum it was ALWAYS met with a distained look and a "oh I don't have anything to do with those forums"! I am SURE that I am not alone

Now, I have my own view on this but.........

Why do you think this is the case? Let's see how many different answers we can get

Oh, one last thing before we start, keep it light as there are LFS members amongst us

Off we go then!

:shifty: :shifty: :shifty: :shifty: :shifty: :shifty: :shifty:
:shifty: !! LFS Members !!! :shifty:
:shifty: :shifty: :shifty: :shifty: :shifty: :shifty: :shifty:

Trouble is, I try to avoid such situations (over hearing LFS 'advice') as I'd end up biting my lip off....

Well, only today I overheard the owner of an lfs *recommending* fishy forums to a customer ( obviously I piped up and recommended this one  )

Crikey! :hyper: I have saved myself a fortune since heeding advice from this forum rather than listening to the salesman......I mean LFS server.

It makes me laugh when a saturday/sunday person.........roughly around the age of 15 tries to tell you how to look after your fish.......! I just bite my tounge!
The best advice i've had is from this site and all the guys and girls on it! There was one great lfs near me.....family run and they were all great and helpful, they have been there for years! I drove past last week, and it's closed down!

hey I'm 14... Sorry about ur fish store. there arn't many fish stores that give useful advice.

I was sold a Rusty Plec for my 29gal, typical me not researching properly the L number before I got it!

Anyhow when I returned it to the shop the next day, they asked why and I explained that I'd seen the size they can grow to on some websites, which was greated with the typical *oh I never trust forums*, but I then gave it a run through of the other stuff about the plec which was on there, and in the end as I was leaving after swapping the Rusty for my little boy BN I had the sales attendent asking which sites I used as they seemed to have the right sort of info on them! For reference I'd seen the Rusty info on PlanetCatfish and also, of course, recommended this place!

I like to quiz the employees about oscars, plecs, goldfish, and bala sharks to see what I'm dealing with... I once had a PetSmart employee tell me that a fully grown oscar needs 20 gallons, and a pleco needs 30 gallons.

thanks, im one of those lfs members ;)

my opinion is that there are three possible reasons why they may feel this way:

a) they think they already know enough that they dont need to go somewhere to learn more

B) they dont really care about it as they are only in the job for the money and couldnt give a rats

or c) they dont have the internet!!!

this place has been invaluable since i first started posting here. i was doing ok before in certain areas but since coming here i have come along in leaps and bounds with regards to knowledge in all areas of the hobby. this is exactly why i think all lfs staff should come to places like this.

thats my 2c worth :)

I'm a 15 year old Saturday person... ;) .
And inversely it makes me laugh when 'adult' customers come in and try to tell me how to sell fish, because they have read up on some very inaccurate info on a website or forum. It's always a good feeling refusing an ignorant/arrogant customer a sale because they cant properly care for an animal, but unfortunately I know for fact they just go shop elsewhere.

Personally, I don't usually like recommending forums or websites most of the time.
The thing is that people who come the shop for specific advice usually do so because they cant/don't want to use the internet as a resource.
But if the shops busy and I have a lot of customers to go around, I always recommend this site as a resource, mainly on cycling a tank.

I ran into a situation this afternoon at an LFS in my area. I went in to get some cardinal tetras to go with the black neons in my 20 gal. (I wanted cardinals because i had read on here that they are hardier than neon tetras.)

The guy (which has years and years of experiance) said not to bother because the cardinals dont hold up, and pointed me to the neon tetras.

Well i said i read on the internet (i didnt want to try to make him understand the forum and the addiction behind it) that cardinals are hardier than neons. He said i wouldnt belive everything you read on the internet.

I just shook my head and said "OK"....i didnt want to get into a debate.

I got six neon tetras....i'll see how they hold up.

dont buy cardinals i baught 10 of them in a 11g tank 54l and they are sooooo
prone to diesese and are very shy and will be scared of you and wont eat

Cardinals are much hardier, you just have to have the right water conditions, same with any fish.

Either you just bought them from a bad source and they came with disease, or your water conditions aren't the best for them.

Also, adding 10 cardinals to a 54 litre at one go is bound to leave you with problems anyway.

Neons on the other hand all seem to be weak and inbred, and frequently come with NTD.
