I'm thinking of trying my salty hands. I will be starting with a small tank like 12 gallons. Is there any saltwater fish that can live in 12 gallons? I would prefer a tank with no coral because it is very expensive. I know saltwater is expensive in general but what price range would I be looking at for the equipment and fish? What re good saltwater beginner fish to have?

Damsels are nice, and they don't need coral. Most are small, and they make nice fish. Also make great beginner/cycling fish. Equipment has a very large range depending on what you want.

Where is a good site to buy all the testers and are the filters something different or can a filter from a freshwater tank work?

Well, Live Rock is your filtration in a marine setup. Standard biological filters are just nitrate traps unless cleaned REGULARLY. Also some freshwater test kits can work, but its best to buy new ones TBH. Salifert makes the best and most accurate kits by far.

Since you're new to the salty side, you might want to check out all the stickies at the top of the marine and reef chit chat section. Lots of great info for anyone in there :)

if ur just starting out, a small tank is ideal, but something bigger than 12 gallon might be better. unless money is an issue, id go at least 30-40 for a first tank. my first tank was 37 gallon, and now i wish id boughten a bigger one cuz it restricted me from tangs, tiggers, and other crazy creatures. but if ur lookin at just like damsels, maybe a clown or two, then 12 would be ok. its all what is best for you, just i know how it is later on down the road and ull be like man i wish i spent the extra 60 bucks for a larger tank. good luck
