Thinking Of Marine

i am a dad now seffie! i now have a reason to scare the kids LOL

hey guys thanks for your input.

As always this forum has given me some confidence in my research.

as ive learned crushed coral can harbour toxins and make life harder if a mistake is ever made.

my calcs show that i should need 45kg+ of live rock, more the better but dont compramise space as inverts like to scavenge the tank bed.

with the powerheads what types are better your average powerhead or the wavemaker types?.

want to keep some reeflife like mushrooms, leathers, then after tank matures and ive gotten more experience an anemone or 2.

ive seen tanks my size that have 3 large fish and more in the way of reeflife as display and this has never interested me much (why have a 5-10 foot tank with three large fish of say 5-7 inches and the colours made up of reeflife?? forgive me ive a tinge of ocd about me).

i was initially thinking fiji live rock, with some australian gold sand, having some small invertabrates (sure you guys wil help with this), and your average easy keep community marine fish(2x clown fish for my twin daughters have to part of this build i have been instructed) to ease me into this salty side, filling my 2 bottom trays in my eheim pro 3 with live rubble leaving the top pair of trays for phosphate filtration adjusting the oulet nozel to a wide mouth nozzle to aggitate 1-2 inches depth of surface water from left to right, leaving the wave makers to provide current over the fiji rocks to filtrate, and have the hang on skimmer do its thing. the juwel lighting units are a common achillies heal to these tanks for faliurs, i may do away with this lighting unit and have a canopy lighting unit instead with 2x54w t5;s then later in life upgrade to halides.

Re: the powerheads, it all depends on your budget. Ive heard great things about the vortechs but theyre quite pricey. Me personally, I use koralia powerheads, the flow is great, the newer models consume less power and produce less heat.

Not quite sure if having a wavemaker benefits the system more than just regular powerheads, considering most wavemakers are just 2 or more powerheads run by an electronic device that synchs them in a way to develop wave like motion of the water. You could always get some koralias and if you decide you want a wavemaker, buy the controller for it at a later time. Only certin models of koralias can be hooked to it though if i'm not mistaken.

Indeed the 12v ones:

This is not suitable for your tank though, if you are going with koralias or the like you are better off having four powerheads, maybe the k4 or 5? cant remember their output
