Thinking Of Joining The Salty Side - Some Thoughts....

I think your tank size is fine for what you want, I don't know much about Hawkfish but have read they do clash with CUC as that is their diet in the wild although there are different types of Hawkfish and some are more peaceful than others so it depends what type you want, check on Google and see if any are compatible, Goby and pistol shrimp pairings are awesome, I have a pair, they have a symbiotic relationship in where the goby is the pistols eyes as they have poor eyesight so if the goby is out of the tunnel the pistol knows it is safe to come out too if the goby dashes in so does the pistol, the pistol benefits the goby in that it builds and maintains the cave they hide in, my goby also feeds the pistol

Why is this s problem with hawkish?

They have a taste for shrimp that will fit in their mouths, which are sort of surprisingly big when you see one yawn. I've never kept one, but, from what I've heard/read from folks who keep hawkfish, they are mainly an issue with small shrimp (peppermints, sexy shrimp, etc.) and little fish like neon gobies - basically stuff that fits in their mouths and isn't in a hard shell. Hermits and snails should be fine, and I would think that big shrimp like a full-sized cleaner or a CBS would probably be ok with a small hawkfish species.

Its flame hawkfish that interest me - would one of those be okay with cleaner shrimp?

I wouldn't risk it tbh either get one or the other, I have never kept a hawkfish but have read they will eventually if not straight away kill the shrimp failing that the shrimp will probably be in hiding all the time.
