Hi Howard :)

In my limited experience with angels, I've learned that some of the "fancier" types aren't hardy at all (in fact no angels are truly hardy, but the fancy ones are even worse) - steer clear of Kois, etc if you want slightly sturdier angels. Apparently silver angels are slightly hardier than most.

You can't sex angels without watching them breed, so if you want a pair you're better off buying 3 or 4 babies and selling the extras when they pair off (although I wouldn't recommend 4 babies from the same batch as that'll be inbreeding and angels are inbred enough), or buying a breeding pair. I wouldn't have more than 2 adult angels in with what you already have.

I would recommend having plenty of cash ready for imminent treatment, as stress seems to bring on quite severe and costly illness in angels, so tank moves etc are a risk. You'll probably be fine, but it's best to be ready (we weren't and my God it hit us hard!).

As for the tetras, I'm not really sure on that one as we don't have any smaller tetras any more (no they didn't get eaten *lol*), but I've seen lots of people keep angels with small tetras with no problems, and have also read on here about angels eating neon sized tetras. The Glowlights are the smallest aren't they? Mabe someone else can advise you on that side of things.

Best of luck!

Kathy

Hi i have been keeping two 8 month Angels with Glowlights and Cardinals, and apart from chasing them away from their home spot in the tank ,they completely ignore them. One of mine is a Koi and he is super ,very bright orange and black. His name is Tango, as in you've been Tangoed  .My other lovely boy(or girl) is a Leopard, hie name is Sky, because he has a lot of blue on his fins.

thanks for that kathy what sort of illnesses did they get and were they easy to treat

Hiya,

If you are planning on breeding angels good luck unless you give them a tank of there own. Or alternatively another to put the eggs into.

I have kept angels for over 15years and have bred them for 5. My oldest angel is 11 years old this year. Even though she is no longer a breeder for me, due to age, it proves with the right care that they can live for a very long time.

Its best to locate a breeder in your area and buy the angels from them. Most imported fish are of very weak genetics and literally die within a year or two.

To raise angel babies I would recommend a 4ft tank otherwise they will more likely get stunted.

I have never had an angel eat any live fish except guppy fry. Of course if you are lucky enough to get one of the bigger strains then you might have troubles but for most part your tetras will be safe.

thanks for that joel has given me something to think about i only have the one tank and am unable to get another as i have my first child on the way

so with that i take it it is inadvisable to have a go at breeding. so if i just 2 from lfs would they be ok?

I would either get 1 or 3 ...

getting two could mean one constantly bullies the other. Getting 3 means that it will hopefully spread the aggression between the 2 of them.

If you happen to get a pair dont worry about it though ... they cant do much damage unless the fish are slow moving. Main worry being the shrimps, I have never kept them so cant really comment.

Good luck with your venture :)

The problem being though that if you buy three and two pair off, the other becomes the whipping boy :/

thanks for that kathy what sort of illnesses did they get and were they easy to treat

They had a stress related illness that others have reported to me as common in angels, especially poorly bred ones and the fancier varieties. It had a variety of symptoms including a poor slime coat and severe finrot (despite excellent water quality). We used a hit it hard from both angles regime - Protozin and a salt solution (1%, 1 tspn per gallon), which worked for the two that survived. The Protozin was for treating any fungal/parasitic side of things and the salt was the anti-bacterial. I'm not sure which was the one that fixed the problem, but I'd recommend the use of both together just for the fact it was an urgent case and we had to hit it hard.

One died just before this treatment regime, and another I had to euthanise as she was past saving when treatment kicked in. The other two made a very fast and excellent recovery. I've seen similar illness in other angels recently - it does seem to be brought on by stress (in the other case it was a tank move, in our case they came tatty and became ill, as did the ones left in the LFS which died). I've had people very experienced in angelfish keeping report similar illness to me - it was them who advised me of this treatment regime. :)

Good luck!

thank you all for your advice am about to take a trip to the lfs so i shall what he has in and go from will let you know the out come

thanks again howard

1. Angels will eat small fish that fit in their mouths. I use angels to control swordtail pops.
2. Angels will typically leave 400-500 eggs/spawn and more is not uncommon.
3. Spawning angels can drop eggs every 10-14 days.
4. Keeping spwaning angels in a community tank usualy results in no fry as the eggs will be eaten by something, even the parents who do so rather than let the food go to others. Also, spawning angels will become very agressive and may kill other fish in the tank.
5. If you want to spawn angels, a 20 gal tall is sufficient- you will need lots of 55s for the fry.
