Thinking Of Getting A Betta...

Well I have some advice. Keep the water temp. warm of course. If you are thinking of getting other fish to go with it be careful. Watch how they react to each other first. Don't get any rosy barbs, or the rosy barb will nip the betta. (Bettas like to bully smaller fish that look liek the betta or have wavy fins) What are you planning to feed the betta by the way? (They like bloodworms). :)

my Betta will be getting bloodworms, not live though as I don't think they're available up here, but i'll have a better look soon. I'll also be feeding pellets, peas, I drop in the ocassional cucumber slice etc and prob daphina too, does all that sound ok? The only fish I'll be adding will be either pygmy cories or a different species of cory, maybe pandas if I could get them as the peppered prefer cooler water. And my frogs when I get them! African Dwarf Frogs. I've got a 1 1/2 gallon spare tank which I'll use if the worst comes to worst and I have to take Mr Betta out of there. :D I'd like to get a 5 gallon then though if that happens but hopefully it won't come to that...

Hi there, no not got him yet. I'm afraid I wpn't be getting him until after Christmas as I have the tank and heater and filter but no hood or lighting yet, or decor fot that matter! I'm getting the stuff I need as Christmas pressie so I'll have him in early January hopefully! :D

i dont know if id recomend the frogs with a betta, i had to seperate mine as the frogs are always going up to the surface for air and it really got on my bettas nerves.. he used to nip their heads and feet

Well, tankmates for bettas, in general, is on a betta per betta basis.

Some bettas don't care, some enjoy it, some will suffer for it, and some will try and kill anything in their water.

My old betta, Sori, can only wiggle when he swims and can barely turn a circle, but when he gets his gumption up, he could kill a ghost shrimp which has no where to hide. My female doesn't seem to care about her tankmates, yet, and she's got 3 ADFs and 7 ghost shrimp.

*edit: peediepixie, You seem to have your act together, as far as bettas And tankmates go. Your betta will obviously be well cared for.

thank you for the compliment
:D

I hope everything works out but like I said if my Betta, whoever he may be, doesn't like having tank mates I do have the spare 1 1/2 gallon to seperate him temporarily. Aaarrgggh! So impatient to get them all now! :hyper:

Why can't you just hop in a car, taxi, or bus and go to a pet store and get one?

My tank isn't ready yet. Don't have a hood or lighting so might have escapees in the Betta and the frogs! Also, where I live is a pretty small place and only 2 fish shops. Only one of which is worth their salt. i'm getting my fish from there as they tend to be much higher quality and they don't keep too many Bettas. They have none a tall just now and neither does the other shop. They are getting a little guy in for me when I want him though. Nice, small, safe place to live but limited retail facilities!

You could get plastic canvas and use it as a lid and put a desk lamp over the tank for light. It's the redneck way of doing things. :p Then get a high quality betta from http://www.aquabid.com and there you go
