HI all,

Does anyone know of any good guides on setting up a marine aquarium..

Also, could someone give me a basic list of items needed for a tank, or point me to an online resource, more than happy to read :D

Im looking to get an idea of cost, before i decide on marine or tropical, i understand that marine will be more expensive, and more of a challenge...

Thanks in advance
Steve.

1st off welcome to the salty side, the best advice i can give is to have a read up on some of the marine journals, they are an excellent resource themselves and will give you a good idea of what to expect. and then ask lots of questions, but the best advice i can give you just do your research and take your time decide which way you want to take it but take it slowly. as a rough idea on the costs it all depends if you plan on just buying a complete set up, not the best way to learn anything tho. or buying all your equipment brand new or as i have done slowly getting equipment 2nd hand which has cost me approx £200 to go from empty tank (which i already owned) to the small beginnings of a reef set up..........read up & good luck

Thanks, i will definetly be reading up i love reading, and i love fish, so seems like a good combo.

Money is going to be tight for the next 30 years.... as i am just in the process of buying mine and my finacee's first house, so i will be looking to do it peicemeil and buying seconed hand bargins as i move forward.

Thanks for the advice.

Like Daysofspeed says read through some of the journals, but I really stress the following. Buy or check out in the library a book or two. Two good books to start you out.

The simple guide fo to Mini-reef Aquariums by Jeffrey Kurtz

The New Marine aquarium by Michael S. Paletta

Why do I say read first? Because then you'll have a general idea and you can ask more informed questions.

It's possible to do Marine on a budget if you again, read, and you know what you can get second hand and what you must splurge on.

I'm also building a system from a converted freshwater tank.

Welcome to the salty side. :)

well thats how i did it but i did have a 55 UKG tank that i already owned to start me off so that hasn't really added to the cost. once you have done the research, and i spent months on it you will know what eqpt you would like then just buy it a bit at a time, i cant stress enough that patience is the key to this hobby
*EDIT* ps when house hunting check for somewhere to put a big tank because in time you will want bigger :good:

Welcome to the salty side! Its expensive, but you wont regret it!

As others have said, the journals were a huge help to me, I only started setting mine up earlier this year.. tho I did it the expensive way and bought every thing new, coz I was too impatient to wait for 2nd hand bargains, and so far ist cost me in the region of £1600, and I'm yet to get any livestock, apart from 2 clowns i have!

Once you've done your reading, just ask LOTS of questions, no matter how silly you think they are.. beleive me, I've asked some rediculous questions, but sometimes, its the only way!!
