Some of you may remember that about a year ago my wife told me I could get just one more tank....just a little one....to go on the window sill in the kitchen...... :D :D

...and careful (and lucky) watching of ebay turned up something a little larger than she had planned.....

5ft long, 2 ft high and 6.5 inches wide .... a perfect fit for the window...

Since then we have had a couple of move-rounds with the tanks, but it has mainly been livebearers. This all changed a couple of weeks ago when I decided to go with what someone on here suggested and move my Convicts into there (they just kept breeding and now there are quite a few juves that I will need to take to the lfs).

So this is it.....Mrs Ava says it looks a little "masculine" and it is certainly a dark-coloured tank.....I am not sure if it is quite there yet....but I will leave it for a couple of weeks and see how it grows on me.....I need a little more rock up the right and left hand sides..

One mating pair of Convicts have set their territory on the left, the other pair are on the far right.....the juves all tend to hang out in between the rocks and elsewhere in the tank..

Also in the tank are 1 x Synodontis Eupterus ......he sits in the middle in the slate hill.......a bristlenose that everyone ignores .......and three Zebra Loaches who think the convicts are other loaches and try to shoal with them..... :D

There is a lot of potential aggro in this tank......but there are also enough gaps and crevices to run away to........but i am keeping a very close eye on it.....suggestions welcome..........

Fish tanks can go in front of windows? I thought the sun light was bad for the water.

It isnt really that bad for them it is just having to deal with algee problems. I have a lot of trouble with algee...

Ava! Great to see you back again!
Awesome tank  Good luck with the fry :p

I really like that tank. I also have my tank in front of a window. I keep the blinds closed but some light does get in. The algae hasn't really been a problem for me. At one time, I kept a planted tank with livebearers and it was in front of a window that was never covered. Those were the prettiest plants I have ever had! And no algae! I don't know why I really don't have a lot of problems. There is a little on the pots in there but I like it because it gives them a more natural look. I never see any on the glass. I have seen it in my 55 when it was way across a long room from a window on an inner wall. Strange!

well it is, but if you look closely the kitchen has a conservatory on the back of it, this would help block out some of the direct sunlight.

Great update ava, good to see you back on the forums.

Thanks all......well remembered The-Wolf.......conservatory on the back with opaque roof and roof/window blinds...

We do get a little algae in this tank, but no more than you would expect from a tank that has good light getting to it.

I will try some more pics at some stage.

When I first got my mollies and had loads in one tank they kept all my algae down, as long as I didn't overfeed them.

:D

Looking alot better than when it had platties and all sorts of other things in there..

Only thing is, is it really wide enough for a Syno. Euruptus? I know its 6.5" but thats pushing it a bit. Do you plan to move him when he is fully grown?

Ben

Bunji.....we have two Syno's and they are both around 6 inches in length....(only one is in this tank)....and they have been that size for the last four months or so.

If it becomes an issue I will move him (or take him to the LFS (or offer him on here)), but to be honest he would only touch front to back if he really tried to lie flat across the tank and as he most often can be found beneath a piece of slate, waiting for nightfall, he is normally lying at an angle.

I have found a variety of websites some of whom say that they will grow to a size of 25cm, others to only 15cm. To be honest, I will play it by ear..........I have a slightly larger tank on the way.. :D :D :look:  :shifty: :shifty: and they may well move to that depending on how I move the tanks round in the house. :S

Wow, that tank is great!! What a unique shape :D

I've been wondering where you have been AB.

I have always Liked that Tank.

Looks Even Better than it Used To.

Thats cool, there are indeed conflicting repots.. depending what type it is, it could grow up to 8" quite easily, although 6" is the usual. I know you have other ok sized tanks so rehoming wouldnt be much of an issue.

Ta Ben.....

I don't really know how old the fish are when they are fully grown. I know some will grow and grow continually through their lives, whereas others just stop at their "mature (in tank) size".

These are probably a year old now and don't seem to have grown very much at all recently.

Beautiful fish, in a dark way...................and I will always remember what the lfs guy said......"yeah, no problems, they grow to around 5cm and are happy with just about any other fish".....

...2 Apple snails and a few missing neons later and I beg to differ......

I want this tank!! Fab idea for a window sill!
My main community tank is in front of a window and have no problems with algae and my plants look fab. I do keep net curtains over the window though so the light is reduced substantially.
Great idea for a tank though and like the layout!
