They just get WORSE!!!

"To maintain good water conditions, remove about one half of the water weekly..."

Wouldn't the nitrites and ammonia build up so much by then? I mean you aren't 100% getting rid of them you are just "diluting" them. And in such a small bowl wouldn't is just be easier to dump out ALL of the water instead of 50%. :grr:

"Every four to six weeks make a complete water change.."

That is ridiculous. Maybe if you cycled the bowl.

Oh and here is a good one...

"makes a stunning decorative arrangement in any room."

BETTAS AREN'T DECORATIONS! THEY ARE LIVING CREATURES! :grr:  :-(

It's not so bad, it's 3/4 of a gallon which is quite big for most store selling standards, they'll usually coax you into buying something like 1 liter big or those little decorative teeny tiny cups. I've heard of bettas living comfortable in 1/2 gallons too. As for the flowers, well it's just like a plant and at least you can feed the betta and it has air and the water can be changed, unlike the "betta in a vase sustainable ecosystem" bit.

I wouldn't buy it, I'd rather make it at home. I had a similar setup, in a 1.5 gallon bowl I had a plant sticking straight out of it, before I decided to trim it back.

Isn't there a plastic cover that goes on it and the flower stems fit through a small hole? Is this where the betta is supposed to get oxygen? :dunno:

Anyways I write Petco a letter.

Like I said, it's not so bad. For those who are betta educated could make more holes to breathe. Plus, i'm sure the hole in that cover is quite big if the flowers are expanding like that. Unfortunately there are many betta uneducated and those would be the ones to buy that without realzing how easy it is to make it, or putting more holes in the cover or knowing that a betta in that bowl should have it's water changed twice a week.

It's a lot better than some of the things seen on ebay or in other LFS chains (like the bettas bags, betta in a frame or the betta in a glass block). It's a pretty generous setup compared to others out there, I don't think it requires a letter of complaint though.

It's not so much the bowl, but the instructions and directions to only change the betta's water 100% every 4-6 weeks.

My betta was happy in his 1/2 gallon bowl for 4 years. He blew his bubble nest all the time and was only sick once.
