In my tfh magazine they have many ads for those little 1-2 gallon aquariums. In the MiniBow 5 ad I just saw, they advetise 10 guppies and 11 white clouds in one tank. I also see like 5 goldfish in little 2 gallons too. You all know that this isn't exceptable but many beginners see what's on the box and think that's what you do.

I went to petsmart and these girls had a 5 gallon aquarium. They were preparing to buy 5 male swordtails and 2 plecos. I asked them what size their tank was and they said oh that one over there. less than 5 gallons. I politly explained that that isn't good for the fish and so they told the employee, just get what she says. OMG! I was picking out someone elses fish! Lol, they just let me do it. They liked the fancy guppies so I convinced them to get 3 male fancy guppies and 2 otos. They liked another one so they ended up getting 4 fancy guppies. Well, it's better than what they were going to buy. They were older than me too so it was kind of hard talking to them. I thought at first they were being like smart @$$es but they really wanted my help!!!!!! I thought it was so cool! I also convinced them to get one of those mini heaters too! But they told me they were just getting exactly what was shown on the box of the tank they bought. Ughhh, the companies need to stop doing that. And most of the time those fish aren't even in the tank. They are added with a computer!

So that's my story! :hey:

Unfortunately it's true! I usually have asked people to use their healthy COMMON SENSE - if they have one...

I was standing at the register at my lfs the other day and noticed they had a huge stack of 10 gallon tanks in, for Christmas. I was bored and waiting so I started counting all the fish that were advertised on the box cover, IN the 10 gallon mind you. It came up to like 45 fish  ,angels with tetras etc, etc. It was horrible. The beginner would honestly think that was appropriate

And just think....those fish actually DID have to go into that tank together in order to take that picture, I wonder what ever became of them -_-

I've noticed a lot of gross misrepresentation of fish lately in commercials too. A betta in a salt tank breeding with a tang for some beer commercial. Wal-mart has a Christmas commercial in which the final shot is...about 8-10 goldfish crammed into a bowl. Dillards has one also with goldfish where they decorated the bowl with Christmas ornaments ...a Christmas tree with fake snow that if you look really close...it's leaching into the tank because the water is all cloudy :X :X :X ,I could go on & on

I am extremely ashamed and hate myself for it, but I ended up buying 17 fish for my five gallon! :*) All but three died, and the thing wasn't even cycled for half an hour! :-( They should have a disclaimer that tells people the maximum capacity for the tanks. I learned my lesson the hard way; I don't want more fish to die b/c of this...

I think they load the tanks with many fishes just for the picture for advertising.

I was at the uptown Petco last Friday 'browsing' for any new 'arrivals'. (some of you know what I mean :fun:) There was this young girl and her mom also in the betta lounge looking. The girl said 'look mom, just like the one we have'. Then she wondered if she could get another one and put it in the same tank. Right there I had to intervene. I think I spent 30 minutes answering all their questions. From caretaking to books to what I knew about breeding - just the basics and how much room they might need - to bloodworms to how we both keep a betta in a quart-sized tank and how to decorate it to accent the surroundings. They ended up buying bloodworms, blue gravel, pink gravel, and a couple of little plastic plants. It felt so weird having an answer for each of their questions. But I'm glad they liked the idea of using the little tank as a room accessory. :)

Whoa! I guess they were all so irresistible. :) I have that problem, too.

Nice going! :D You just might have saved that poor fish from being killed.

Do you think the person from Petco would have let her buy it w/o asking her if she knew how to care for it?

It was my first time buying fish and I bought it from Walmart and the guy didn't know a thing about fish. (it figures) And the picture on the box didn't help, either.

I have the horror stories of all horror stories of cramming too many fish in a "tank"...

It was about six years...again, didn't know anything about fish...figured if they could physically fit, they'd be fine. I put four calico fancy goldfish in a 1/4 gallon fish bowl. I finally read up on fish after I lost all four after two days. Poor guys...

yeah, and i love how not only are teh fish on the boxes mostly placed there using computers but they also make the fish smaller so they look to fit. sheesh. the one gal aquascenes i bought though only showed i believe three fish, platies or something like that, so at least thats not SOOOOO bad, though i'd never try to fit three platies in one, jsut not enought room, bout all that fits is a betta. but people dont' do research on cats and dogs when they get them (they get a cute little fuzzy ball of a puppy, but then it grows up to be an 80 to 100 pound dog so they dump it off at the pound because "it got tooo big", or "it has too much energy", or "it always pees on the carpet"), maybe if peopel were more responsible in how they go about getting pets in the first place, all pets, even fish (which most people take LESS time to care about than dogs and cats, despite the fact that fish are living creatures tooo.................) then there wouldn't be these kinds of problems.

I agree. :*) But it would be hard to make research on fish mandatory before a purchase.

And you're right, that story is far worse than mine! Poor fishies. We (or I if you take offense) were so foolish...

Yeah, they do that with Lee's betta hexes and dual hexes.

Ahhhh, my first fish tank. brings back nightmares, I mean memories.

One gallon hex. a small koi, fancy goldfish and pleco. Gotta love it. Then I put them in the ten gallon, grew too big... I had no idea!!! they went to the lfs and I got tiger barbs, green barbs, albino barbs, gold barbs and pink kissing gourami in my 10 gallon. I learned though....

No the petsmart employee wasn't going to say anything. Sometimes I just want to apply there so I could make their place better. Same with wal-mart. It wouldn't be that hard to hire someone with some experiance. If the vet's office I work at now goes out of business (doc died) then I will probably apply a wal-mart because the guy in the pet section always asks me questions about the fish because he doesn't know. He was also asking me about shots for his puppy lol! I don't think I could stand it though because little kids come without parents and like tap the glass and grab the food off of the counter and feed them or something.

I went to wal-mart and these little girls had a net and were chasing around the feeders which had ich. This wasn't my local wal-mart, they have clean fish. They put the net back into the clean nets (way to spread the disease) and so I took it out and there was a feeder in the net. They were just going to leave it in there and let it die. I would probably end up kicking a kid and get fired.

No offense at all...I'll agree whole-heartidly I was very foolish (and naive)

I agree. But it would be hard to make research on fish mandatory before a purchase.
Maybe it should be a requirement that the people SELLING the fish should be tested before they start.

My first tank was a similar experience. I had one of those AquaBabies tanks (I know  ) and decided after a few months I enjoyed fish and wanted more.

I bought a 5g tank, thinking that would be enough for my growing HABIT (NOT ANYMORE). I then went to PetCo and started picking out fish with my 5 yr old. We got a pair of Marigold Swordtails, a pair of Red Wag Platys, a Pair of White Mollies, and a Pleco. While picking out the fish, the guy actually asked me how big the tank was, and I told him, 5g. He said "oh" and kept getting the fish. Then he asked if I wanted male/female pairs. Of course I said yes. All animals deserve a mate, right?

I ended up having the White Molly release a batch of fry 6 days later.....I had no idea they came preggers???? Then they all started dying. I kept taking them back to the store for replacements, and they kept giving them to me. No one even TRIED to explain the husbandry to me, or figure out why I kept bringing back dead fish.

Then I found "Aquarium's for Dummies" and began the research. I am so ashamed of the way I treated (and killed) those poor fish.

At least we LEARN from our mistakes :)
