There There...

There, their & they're is actually quite confusing and I have only really gotten used to it. But this is a forum with thousands of people from different walks of life and it's a bit hard to expect proper grammar from every individual

ha ha i'm a prime culprit for this one. i always get my there's mixed up.

When I'm being on the ball I do think about it when I write them. But if I'm sleepy, or it's a morning, or i'm in a mood or if it's a day between monday and sunday I tend to forget to check

so your assuming english is everyones first launguage

and maybe some people are dyslexic ( see i cant spell lol)

Doesn't it seem like a thread goes along normal for half a page or so, then someone always comes in and drops a flame bomb on the thread? ie: "Grammar cop" and "heres 40 cents, call someone who cares"

*weeps*

Trying to improve spelling and grammar on this forum is pretty hard. The worst culprits are lazy people who think it is cool to not care about the written word.

Next lesson, when to (and when not to) end on a preposition!

Followed swiftly by the difference between to, too and two.

And finally, my favorite, the verb "to of". There is no such phrase, it is should/could/would have, and would thus be abbreviated to should've (not should of).

But those who most need to take note from these guidances are those that will not care or listen (none so deaf as those who do not wish to hear).

Edit

Dyslexia and lazy grammar are different. there was a member a while ago who was dyslexic and they noted it in their sig. Typos happen to the best and worst of us, but these points are somewhat different. I have never noticed a foreign speaker using the imaginary verb "to of".

I know. It saddens me how unfriendly these forums can be.

While we are at it.

My pet peeve, the use of can I or may I.

Yes you can in most cases, or at least if you are smart enough to do it, but may I is up to the person you are asking, lmao.

Example, I got a High School English teacher on this one. She asked if she could work on some of the puzzle books I brought to entertain myself during the county fair I was working. I told her that I'm sure she could, but it was up to me as the owner of the books if she may. IOW'S, asking "Can I" is asking if you have the ability, "May I" is asking permission, two different things.

Sorry, not only did some English lesson (American form of English) from High school actually sink in, but I also worked 7 years in a candy factory where the founder was a High School teacher that would correct any uncorrect English instantly, Uncle Bill did not allow his "children" to speak impropertry, lol. I will never claim to be the best of spellers or use proper Americanized English, but do manage to do fairly well without spell check, ROTFLMAO.

I don't think it really matters. different people speak in different ways, everybody has different levels of education. doesn't mean one person is better than another, just because they're educated.

Personally I think that this post is a little pointless because the main aim of this site is the fishy interest, not to seperate people into those who can and can't spell, those who are graduates and those who failed their schooling.

While we are at it why don't we seperate the young from the old, the males from the females, and have every country seperated. We could have a thousand different sections to the forum then, and sit there all day waiting for someone to reply to your post.

There are lots of people who use abbreviations on this forum and sometimes I have to ask what they are, but I don't mind.

Just so you can judge me I am 31 so neither young nor old, I left school at 16 although I passed all GCSE at C or above.

Most of my posts are so badly spelled because I am on a lot at night and therefore terribly drunk, whereas I am currently at work and so am only half drunk. lol

aint my fault im a retard at least i try..........................................

It's horses for courses

There is another fishy forum (which it is verbotten to mention by name on here) - with more members whose native language isn't English - where it is expected that posts are written in gramatically correct English and abbreviations aren't allowed. I sometimes go there because I like the more detailed posts or because I want some information - I hate the search facility on here (although I have recently twigged that you can use Google to search just this forum). I don't stay there because it gets a bit boring.

I come here because there are more members, things move faster, it's more fun and it's more entertaining.

This isn't about having a go at people though, unless they really are just plain idle. (As at times, I am...) (and yes, starting a sentence in parenthesis is wrong, as its starting one in with out a capital letter and beginning with the word 'and').

The point is, that the internet is a text based world, we only have the written word to express ourselves, and if we fail to use the written word correctly, we will fail to express ourselves correctly.

I frequent a lot of forums, some as a Moderator, some as a plain normal user, but in both cases these days I still struggle to understand posts when: They are written all in capital letters; they are lacking in paragraphs; they contain not just incorrect grammar but incorrect words.

Text speak in a post means I just won't read it. It's that simple.

Funnily enough, I am dyslexic to a certain degree (generally more so with numbers than words, and more so with handwritten words than typed/typing), I can quite easily translate even the posts by severely dyslexic users, as long as they attempt to use paragraphs.

I don't have a problem with some incorrect words though, such as 'ain't' . They bring a flavour of accent and dialect into the written form, which I find interesting, it gives me a good sense of the person posting.

Here endeth the lesson.

And the original post wasn't intended to offend?

I'm with the anti-grammar cop brigade. If you dont like someone's spelling and/or grammar, click off their post - no-one's forcing you to put yourself through so much emotional turmoil (tongue in cheek).

Like someone else said, English isnt everybody's first language, dyslexia could be an issue, or it could be someone's in a flap and in need of desperate help and doesn't have time to check their posts.

If you honestly cant read something, then dont. If you're just easily pissed off over very minor things, then that's your problem, not theirs.

The only spelling that makes me cringe is the teenage kids text speak. That is pure laziness. But even then, is it really worth getting your knickers in a twist over?

*sigh* Seems everyone needs a holiday right now, including me...

The OP never said he got "pissed off" over this stuff and even specified that in the title saying by "a not too serious rant". Its not that poor grammar is a major deal but it is a slight annoyance, and at the same time it is extremely easy to correct. That’s one thing that makes it even more annoying, people don't take the time to proofread their post, or run it through a spell check if their grammar really sucks that bad.

A lot of people on this forum would agree that "attention to detail" is pretty much a requirement with keeping fish tanks in good conditions. Those people, including myself, carry over that same mind frame when doing other things, such as posting on here.

Also the point of this forum is to educate people, so I don't see anything wrong with a thread explaining some simple grammar rules that should have been learned in school. I think learning is a never a bad thing, and neither should anyone else.

One last thing, I can use your same attitude back at you, if you don’t like threads about people criticizing bad grammar, then don’t read them! :p :p :p :p :p :p :p
