Hey all! I have noticed in my guppy-tetra tank that almost all of them have some sort of red spikey things in their butts. When I catch them to inspect them the things go back inside of them. What do I do? I seem to have a lot going on in this tank, I see ick that just showed up two days ago that I started to treat at that time with ick medicine. Yesterday I noticed one of them look like she has dropsey and now I see the red spikes (about three of them in some fish) sticking out. I did mannage to pull one of them out and it lookes like some kind of worm (gross!!!) The tank is a 45 gallon breeder and the levels are : no ammonia, no nitrite, 0.5 nitrate and a ph of 7.5. I did a 50% water change on Monday when I noticed the ick and I raised the temp to 84 deg. F, I have the bubble stick on high and the ships bubbler on high as well to increase the oxygen in the tank. I took out the filter What should I do?? I went to the store and bought Jungle brand Parasite Clear, Fungus Clear and Ick Clear along with Coppersafe (just in case I should need one of them at some point -I like to have that stuff on hand for just in case anyway) I nave no intension of using them all at once! What should I do for these fish?? I also have a catfish bottom feeder and a weather loach in this tank. Thanks!

You can buy some Flubenol 15 to treat it, but you need to isolate and only use the net and other stuff for their tank, don't mix it with any other tank.

It takes time to treat them and is not a quick fix.

EEEk just noticed that you said that you yanked one of the worms out of the fish, the worms are feeding off the guts of your fish, you could have damaged it internally now, so keep an eye out for it getting ill.

I agree camallanous worms and do alot of damage to the insides of the fish.
Never pull the worm out as the other member has stated you could end damaging the fish internally.

I think this is exactly what my fish have. I did some looking and found Anti-Bacterial and Anti-Parasite medicated fish food by Jungle. From what I understand a medication called Levamisole can get rid of it in a few days and the anit-parasite medicated food has this stuff in it. Does amyone know if any of these paracsites can be given to humans? Our hands are always in the tanks! We wash them right away but still!! (Gross!!)

Ok, I've been treating my fish with Anti-parasite medicated food with levamisole in it for almost six weeks now. Directions say to feed exclusevly for three consceutive days a week for four weeks one or two times a day. I've done this and see no end to the worm problem in site! I have lost all but one femail guppy and since I use the same vaccuum in all of my tanks, I have been treating all the fish. The other tanks seem fine, I don't see any signs of camallanus in any other tanks (but my 45 gallon tank with the orandas and pearlscale seen to have other problems! All but one of the fish seem to be floating at the top of the tank. When I get close to the tank they all start swimming like they usually do but when resting, they all float at the top. I don't think this is normal but one of them has been doing it for months now and is still eating and doesn't seem to be in any distress) They are on regular flake food and all levels are great in all of my tanks. no ammonia, no nitrites and minimal nitrates. I'm not sure about what to do with the floaters or the fact the worms are still sticking out! Anyone have ideas for me? Thanks!! Lisa

from what I have read I think it would be best to get just the levamisole, but I can't find it anywhere. I have called all of the vets in the area and have had no luck. does anyone know where I can buy it on line or is there someone that has some and can sell it to me? I also need to know just how much to use. Thanks!!

Have a look at nationalfishpharm.com

They are in the US, and sell a remedy called paracide D for treatment of those worms

Hope that helps, Don
