okay.. so... I have posted in this forum about many things.. my divided betta tanks, multiple betta tanks, and of course... my betta fry

It is difficult to even find a decent spot to begin this in...

Well here I go-

My boyfriend and I decided to go out of town for a few days to pick up my sister and her children, in texas.
Before I left I made sure to check all water stats and do a partial water change before we left the apartment.
I also did the same for my dad's bettas.

Over the weekend our entire apartment complex lost electricity...
so our house was nearly 42 F when my cousin came to feed the fish.. By then half were gone.

The electricity clicked back on, on sunday the day we were SUPPOSED to get back home.. but due to some unplanned family emergencies we had to stay a couple extra days..

I just came home not even two hours ago...

And out of my 18 bettas [not including fry] there are only 5 left. Along with all my fry have passed.

NOT TO MENTION... of the 5 alive 2 have fin rot.. Which i'm just now treating.

i have never felt so horrible my entire life.

Oh yes.. and my albino oscar and my gorgeous pleco have passed away.

:(

Thank god my dad's fish are fine though. I don't know what i'd do to myself if something happened to them.

it's fine.
i just feel like it's ALL my fault.
when all of this was out of my hands.

i just feel horrible : / cause i've nursed all of them back to health and watch them grow happier, healthier, and closer to me.

i just am speechless.

It isn't your fault at all, it's just "one of those things". I do know exactly how you feel. This past weekend, we had some chicks ready to hatch, all chirping inside their eggs, just starting to break out.. the incubator went loony overnight, the thermostat must have screwed up and we lost all the chicks over night, it was horrid and enough to put anyone off ever trying to rely on electric/electrical goods for life.

Don't kick yourself at all.

xxx

well thanks a ton maddiej.

my boyfriend said we could just go out and buy some new ones...

i about slapped him for that comment- so i'm sleeping up at my parents house now.

one of the bettas that passed was one of my veiltails that i had for almost 4 1/2 years.

That is aweful! We lost power here in NH for 5 days last week. Luckily my side of town was the only art of So. NH that got power back same night and my betta's we're in transit. I was worried sick that the fish would show and I wouldn't have heat for them.

(YAY! UPS just delivered my Attisons betta pro while I was typing this)

Good luck with other 5.

I'm so sorry, heygetsmart, what a horrible disaster.
And such a heart break to lose a pet who'd been part of your life for such a large part of it, and so deeply embedded not only in your heart but your history and daily life.
I can never find adequate words...
I know it always feels as though we should have been able to save pets we've lost, even when there was no way we could have, it seems to go with the caring.
But there obviously wasn't.
Your boyfriend may come to understand in time, and if he hasn't the capacity, it isn't his fault, it's just sad.
But some men do understand/share similar feelings to ours, despite their generally not being raised to nurture in the same way girls have traditionally been, so he may learn to see your point of view, or at least understand it's valid and respect that.
He was trying to comfort you in the only way he could.
Unfortunately, grief won't go away so easily, and loved ones aren't replaceable by similar models.
And all anyone can do, really, is to say how sorry they are...

friends and family that dont put the time effort and love into our bettas dont often understand when calamity strikes and we lose fish. well my husband understands when I lose several fish worth 30+ bucks that were great spawners, then my husband crys too.

my husband has a battery power back up for his computer and such, to make sure if our power goes out he has the time to properly shut down and not lose data. a small heater takes up much less power then a computer, and bettas can go without a filter for a short time. now when out power will be out for several days I rearange some cords and have only tank heaters pluged into the backup, it will last for several hours if not days depending on the number of tanks you have.

That's smart, newfishy.
We're lucky in Winnipeg, Canada, in that we have a publicly owned facility which puts money into maintenance rather than shareholders, and where winters are typically too cold to have much problem with freezing rain taking down power lines, so outages are typically both rare and short in duration in the city.
Of course, now I've probably jinxed it...

Thanks to all who have given me their sympathy : [
It's just been a rough today.. New year's eve.
And tomorrow will be my 3 year anniversary with my boyfriend.

I'm going to try to be optimistic about this misfortune.

And be well prepared for anything bad that happens.

go ahead and try ebay in the next few days for a battery power back up, it also acts like a very very good surge protector and power condioner-protects from highs as well as lows.

my husband got lucky and picked one up for a dollar on ebay.

Just got back from holiday and read this. So sorry to hear about that, how awful. But I read your other topic too, about the new bettas. i guess you and the bf are OK now? And how are the other fish, the ones that survived? You poor thing, i really feel for you :(

I'm so sorry. I know how you feel. Two cats I've owned passed away, and so did 2 of my fish. They are in that big fish tank in the sky now!!!
RIP-Theo RIP-Gabrielle RIP-Davy RIP-Barney RIP- your 15 little fishies. :-(

Wait until you get married, then you will realise bad days.

5teady no offense, but that ^ was a bit insensitive.

Losing so many fish in one blow is absolutely awful... I can't even imagine how much that would hurt, because it's bad enough to lose one. I know I went through hell with a columnaris epidemic in about October, and I only lost seven. I'm thinking of you.
